Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

thank god we will not get a tonking 8.0 facing munich in the semi's hahaha

i don't want to go and watch last night game again and pick wholes out of it ? its painful and hurting right now
the fall out will have to come and questioned asked and not just at pep but the club and lack of options up front and in defence ? and having players play out of their normal roles

the need for another top draw striker is clear to see, jesus and sterling and injury prone aguero is not enough
we just did not have enough up front and that is why we lost ? we need a world class striker in this team every big game we play somebody to get you out of a hole and score that goal sterling missed last night

am not saying sterling is the blame or a striker in anyway but in this setup pep picks he's in the team to score goals just like jesus ? but that out and out striker scores that goal and the couple more and takes the game from lyon

Have we reached a time when a new style of play is taking over from the wonderful Barcelona days. Pep brought that to us and it was wonder to watch. However, we now see teams like B. Munich and Liverpool playing a more energetic, high tempo, athletic game with very skilful players. Okay, Liverpool have three defensive players in midfield who's sole job is to not let the opposition get out of their half and attack their defence. However, those three midfield players are strong and imposing. We only have one of those in, Kevin. Both Munich and Liverpool have fast defenders in every position. We need, strength, energy and speed injected into our play. When he was younger, Ferno gave us some of that. Just wondering are we now behind the new successful trend?

That shark at Napoli has probably lumped another £20m on top for Koulibaly after last night.

I don't want him, but that defensive showing has put clubs across Europe on high alert there is a killing to be had out of us this window.

The inclusion of Garcia made me almost as angry as the result, he has made his intention clear and yet we overlook Stones for this ungrateful kid?
Remember the only reason Garcia was in the team in the weeks before is that stones and ottamendi have been awful
At least we are trying to replace them
Playing either of them only goes over old ground
Left back issue is same, we need to sort this in next four weeks
I would put 50m and Angelino down for upermecano
Possibly even take Angeline back and bin Mendy/zinchenko

I don't know why PEP keep acting like a drama queen on his knees what the fuck you are manager of Man City not a pub team who missed out a qualication in a cup game
Think you might realise how much of A genius this guy is when he leaves
Look at the swamp in last decade

Feel sick every time I think of that Stering miss
Me too :-(
On a media blackout today.

I’d like to say we were robbed because of that second goal of their’s but in reality we got what we deserved. Too many individual mistakes and not enough creativity.
Pep fucked up spectacularly.

He had enough intelligence and pace to get back and make the tackle, when the other quicker, more experienced players didn't get back. You can keep criticising him like everyone else but we all know why. The same thing happened with Sane, who is now openly considered a lazy twat who never did anything and never deserved to be in the team because he was shit anyway. Grown men who can't handle a bit of rejection.
What the hell you going about? , all I said was Garcia has n't any pace, albeit he did well to get the tackle in.

Garcia like a lot of our defence struggles with pace eg when Aubameyang ripped him to pieces.

i think one of the main reason so many of us are pissed of because of the game before we bossed RM over two games 2-1 each leg. We were up and at them giving them on respect no time to play. Than we give loads of respect to Lyon we dont press them we change our style play to stop them, why ?

I am not a Pep out person but last night i just couldnt make sense of what i was seeing, a team that was so confidant, full of running, exciting turned into a slow, scared lacking confidant team. What happen ?

Yes VAR fucked us over but we werent good yesterday

Still mulling over the hugely disappointing defeat and performance last night.

So the three at the back that was far from a success was implemented due to Pep’s worry about the pace of Lyon’s front and their ability to get in down the sides of the centre backs, so he preferred three defenders to deal with them than two, which I guess makes sense. Still present with those three defenders though was a high line and a lack of pace, so it didn’t resolve things. Surely moving Walker into the right side of the three would have had a more positive outcome ?

Thing is that would just have exacerbated the fact we were going away from what we do well and overly focusing on Lyon’s strengths. Yes we needed to be aware and cautious of their threat and counter-attacks but surely we should have played more to our strengths!

The pedestrian midfield has hurt our game so often this season. That first 40 mins was criminally bad ending up with so many long balls,
Pep really did get it badly wrong and what was worse was that he didnt actually play our best wing backs who are Cancelo and Mendy. They played that role well around the New Year- why didn’t he do that?
It made no sense. Cancelo and Mendy are both great going forward if they have limited defensive responsibility, Walker is dogshit going forward and was wasted as one of the wingbacks last night. Cancell was wasted as well because he's not naturally left footed.

You are I have just checked and only players that go to clubs that have been in a competition for more than 10 years can win it. It's actually in the rules. If you have a manager that has won it with a different club it doesn't matter.

To make matters worse as soon as you put on a shirt from such a club and step onto grass an invisible aura surrounds you that prevents you from playing to a standard you do in the league(this is because we have been in a league for many many years)

Yes sir a team of players cannot win it because the club weren't in it a decade ago. This is perfectly logical and is absolutely correct.

We should’ve stared with the same back four & front three as agin Franco FC with Bernardo replacing Gundogan.

Playing a flexible 4 3 3 would’ve provided more creativity, pace, width and interchange & flexibility.

It would still have left all necessary sub options when needed.

It seems to some on here that Pep has gone from Master Class to Master Bator in seven days....not so, but last nights decisions were utterly baffling.

Where does this bollocks come from?

Did you not see the Arsenal game where we got done by a team using exactly Lyons tactics and formation? Did you not see the Norwich game, Wolves, Spurs, United, Southampton?

Lyon are better than all of them. There's every chance we lost just as easily in a 433.

Pep doesn't make these changes for a laugh, he does it because we've got massive weaknesses that good teams have exploited all season.

I cannot understand the deluded arrogance to think we would have been untouchable in a 433 when we have seen its not true all season long.
Summed up perfectly and that's why I can't understand how strong the criticism has been in relation to team shape and formation. Player selection (Gundogan, Rodri and Fernandinho in combination) all in the same team, is just adding to our problems when we have Foden and Bernardo on the bench.

Sorry for linking to my own tweet, but easiest way to share the image. I really can't get this lineup out of my head if we *had* to play the way Pep set us up. Looks vastly more suited surely...

Agree with all of this and thought your video this morning was bang on. The Rodri/Gundo experiment has to stop, it's been the route of so many of our issues this season.
