Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

Make no mistake we were up against the equivalent of an extra player last night and pep knew what was afoot beforehand hence the selection. Uefa stitched us up. There's more than one way to skin a cat and by giving lyon caRte blanche to use what are officially known as banned substances(though not a failsafe method) their goal was achieved. Beaten by drug cheats end of. 115k to our 106k- that is untold.

I feel your pain.

I agree partially, but I think UEFA likes to have dramatic scorelines which makes a good story. A 2-1 Lyon win doesn't ring same way as 3-1. Having said that, I think if Raz put that in we would have had favourable decisions our way, we could have gone in for the kill after Kev's equalizer, could have been 3 or 4-1 for us. A ManCity Bayern SF would get them more money.
I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking.
The betting odds were 'tempting', and I'm sure there were some very interesting in play betting patterns. I just knew VAR decisions would play a part.

I'm fairly certain some big money was made on the result of our game.

Thanks this has already been mentioned not long after I posted.

However we conceded first in 8 out of the 9 league defeats. The point I’m trying to make is that this season we have failed to turn games around. There has been the odd game but not often.
It’s a fair point...but in 3 CL games we have gone behind, we went on to win them all... prior to last night of course.

While we would all rather go down playing the flowing, fast high pressing game that has brought us trophy success, Pep's unusual selections normally confound everyone with comprehensive wins. But for some weird individual errors, straightforward chance misses an inexplicable miss and being screwed by VAR, we still win that game. Win and it's a tactical masterclass. Nothing Pep can do about those things.
well said Harry. Long may King Peps Reign continue. I love his type of football we are so so lucky to have this man at the helm.

We never had any time on the ball. From the off, within no time there were 2 or 3 of their players on top of us and it continued for the 90. It was unnatural and we were mentally and physically shattered by the last quarter of the match because of it and it is ,in my opinion, mainly why raheem missed that chance that he'd every other time put away .

Yep, watching us under Pep is an absolute joy in what feels like about 90% of our matches each season. Not many of our previous managers I can say that about!

Just been through the Lyon pre match thread. A few things stood out, especially once the team was announced.

1. Considerable number of posters concerned about the team in relation to the expected formation.
2. A few posters called the ensuing outcome correctly based on formation/team.
3. A number of posters deriding those in 1 and 2 above. Funnily enough, haven't heard a peep out of them since full time.

I know there are no guarantees in any match but we have some knowledgeable posters on here who were spot on last night.

What puzzles me is that Pep has a very large coaching staff. I would have thought a few of them would have known the team selected and formation was all wrong. Presumably none of them had the balls to tell Pep or perhaps they did and Pep ignored them.

actually 106 is very low for a c1 match , especially with a 70% possession. This shows u had a very few high intensity runs wich proves ur team was just tired mentally and physically, when lyon rested for 1month then trained for 2. 115 is just a good stat for a defensive team, watch the km of all c1 games...Callin dopin on a french team, ok why not, but we re not spain with dr fuentes lab full of reals and barcas blood preoxyginated, or italy and germany with their magic potions. You were out of shape , and lyon was training for this very day since june.

Agree. Their press was even better than Liverpools. We had no time to do anything, Kevin barely had the time to look up before 1-2 players were there to intercept.

Yeah agreed 1 or 2, maybe I exaggerated 2 or 3 though sometimes it was! But still. It was like 11 v 12 for the whole match and the stats bear it out. Lyon players were loaded.

I’m not going to justify anything. I imagine he looked who was available and decided that Garcia, as a professional footballer would do the job asked and funnily enough, he did.
No he didn’t, cost us the 2nd goal by jumping in too early, as pointed out by ex professional footballer, Rio Ferdinand, afterwards..
It’s in doubt because it’s not happened anywhere near as much as last season. Surprised that’s a contentious comment tbh - it’s been right in front of anybody watching the games.

no it hasn’t, he has worked very hard as usual again this season, it just didn’t work out for him. Stop talking tripe.

You mean you disagree? That's OK.

I've watched countless interviews with Pep where he says the players have to be brave, to believe. Well on our last three champions league defeats he hasn't followed that philosophy himself. His timid approach against Liverpool and Spurs away and last night cost us dearly. The players had to adjust to an alien system at short notice and play in a style they were unnocustomed to. Last night was another horror show where key players didn't play anywhere near their best and at times looked timid and clueless.

The midfield was slow and ponderous, the forwards lightweight and misfiring and the defence......as bad as it's been all.season and I include Ederson in that. He might have won the golden gloves and ping a nice pass around but his positioning and shot stopping are abysmal at times. Walker had another one of his brain dead nights, Laporte totally ineffectual, Garcia is a kid thrown in before his time, Ferna is now too old, Rodri slower than a turning oil tanker, for Gundogan see Rodri. They offered no protection to the back four and created nothing at the other end. I think any Blue seeing that lineup before the start feared the worst and so it proved.

We HAVE to get a world class centre half, forward, holding midfield player and playmaker or we will.be second best next season again. They all have to have PACE and POWER. If we have to sell to buy them so be it, only KDB is off the list for me. We are stuck with Ederson I fear due to Peps style of play but he really has to improve his concentration, positioning and shot stopping.

As for Pep he has to find a way to make our style less easy to play against. Any hard working fit team with pace up front are beating us. Defend in depth and hit long balls over the top, easy. He also has to follow his own mantra and be brave in big games. His fear is getting through to the players.

I suggest you ignore posts like his, we played shit, that's why we lost, we often run those km in a game, we didn't do enough last night, Lyon were stronger, quicker, and fitter than City, and the coach completely out thought Pep with his tactics, in fact Pep over thought his.

Spot on we were poor individually and collectively, including Pep, not for the first time this season. Lyon all knew their jobs, stuck to the plan which they are comfortable with and got their rewards. They might have finished seventh in the French league but are a decent side who will give anyone a game.

I agree, it's always the same type of performance that beats us, it's become tedious this season, we lost to norwich away, having had most of the ball, and something like 25 chances, but they worked hard and challenged us defensively (though it was Stones and Otamendi), and got in behind us a few times.

Same MO in most of our defeats all season, in only a few have we had less goal attempts.

It's infuriating. We have the firepower to win most games but we have to tighten up at the back. Teams are having two attempts and scoring twice, we have twenty plus and if we are lucky score once. We have turned into Keegan's Newcastle.

Yet we have other games where we have 15 attempts, 8 on target, and score 5. Infuriating nails it.
