M.C.F.C V Barcelona

I acstually think we're one of the only teams in the world who have a chance againt Barca.

For a start, we have De Jong. He did incredibly well breaking up their play in the World Cup final. We could also bully Barca much like Chelsea did 3 years ago and we would be a big threat at set pieces.

With a front three of Silva, Aguero and Tevez, we could get a few goals.

Defensively, we can be rock solid. We kept a clean sheet against Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham (two clean sheets) and Liverpool last season!

We may just get the chance this year to pit our wits against them... the draw is on the 25th August and the worst case (best case?) scenario for our group is:-

Barcelona
AC Milan
City
Borussia Dortmund

Now that would be a group of death!

Not a fucking hope in hell. We wouldnt see the ball for 90 minutes.

We are waaaay off the pace with Barca.

Get real.

is it just me that i fear no one, respect them but not scared to play any team. they would be just the same should they draw us.

I just feel we may never know the true potential of our attacking players Vs Barcelona, since we will, most of the time, play in a 4-5-1 against them..like someone said earlier, if our players are confident of themselves, we should start attacking right from the beginning, pressing at them from all sides..who knows, we could accomplish what Real Madrid could not..

yeh, uefa would'nt let it happen but if we drew them away first and came away with a 0-0 we'd attack them here, with our defence inc dejong our forwards would win it for us.our team/club didipline is better than madrids, we wont fall apart.

As long as we put on a performance better than the scum one against Barca I'd be happy tbh.

Swansea had 70% possession at one point early on without getting near us or Joe being tested, can't say that would have happened if we'd been playing Barca.

This question is really interesting as it does put the old adage of 'attack is the best form of defence' to the test because Barca are such a different animal compared with anybody else out there. We could sit back and hope to catch them on the break and get battered; we could go all out attack and get battered.

One thing is for certain though, with Aguero and Nasri (fingers crossed) playing for us we will have a new feather to our bow and something that I think the Blues were somewhat lacking last season, and that is immediate and explosive pace. Aguero and Nasri are both rapid off the mark and this will seriously enable us play either way (counter attacking/all out attack) more effectively.

To the question of whether we'd beat them I'd say probably not, but one thing is for sure, with an outfield consisting of YaYa, De Jong, Silva, Aguero, Nasri/Balotelli and Dzeko/Tevez, we are as well, if not better equipped, than any other team on the planet to get a positive result against them.

nice one mate.

Would we beat a team of 11 David Silva's? Probably not is the answer to that.

What you have to remember is look how much we bash one out about our little star. Silva has that Barca artistry about him and effortless ability to retain the ball and now Fabregas has actually gone there Silva is imo the only player in the Prem you could drop straight into their line up. And they have a whole team of him..... And Messi!

That probably made no sense but i know what i mean. However that said i was lurking (laughing) on Reg Cafe the other day and a red on their was sticking up for our chances in Europe and whilst he said we had flaws he believes that our disciplined defensive nature and the way we set up would be the perfect foil for Barca. Lets hope the twats right!

But put in Aguero, Nasri and Silva behind either Dzeko or Tevez and you have the movement, technical ability, vision and passing ability to mix it with the very best. How many teams/defenders would feel confident of keeping that front 4 quiet - answers on a postage stamp please.

Fella you're preaching to the converted. We have ea team good enough to rival anyone on our day. In my opinion on paper we have one of the top 3 squads on the planet.

However, Barca are different, they are team full of some of the best technical players in the world (like us). They also have the best pleayer in the world, who imo may go down as the best ever (even better than Diego).

But the main reason they are superior to every team on the planet is this collection of exceptional players have been playing together since they were children. They are a once in a century phenomenom.

We will get better and be more of a cohesive unit within a few years... and in the next 10 years i believe we'll knock Barca out of the CL at some point, also think we'll win it too.

I'm not saying they are unbeatable, as no team is, I'm just saying they're closer to it than any team before them.

Indeed.

Think we are getting a bit carried away with our 4-0 win!

United won the title last year and couldnt have complained if they had been beaten 6-1 in the final.

We are some way behind them.

-- Thu Aug 18, 2011 11:23 am --

I think we'd get our arse handed to us both home and away. No shame whatsoever in that and if they play like they did against United in the Final last season then I'd applaud them off the pitch.

Mate wasn't having a dig, I even stated that I thought we'd get beat. I agree with everything you say, especially about the length of time the Barca players having been playing together, including their youth system. And I also agree that in another couple seasons time we are going to have that cohesion and understanding that only time can generate, hence the reason the rags won the title last year. The 'answer on a postage stamp please' was merely to emphasize not only how far we've come, but the potential this side now truly has.

Unquestionably Barca are the benchmark, but for me the way to guage how good your side is is not to look at what individual players you would cherry pick from other clubs ie. Messi, Ronaldo etc. but (hypothetically and if you had to) what team's entire first eleven would you swap for ours? Definitely Barcalona because they are presently the bext team in the world and maybe, at a push, Real's (and I honestly don't know whether, with the inclusion of Aguero and the soon to be Nasri, whether I'd choose Madrid's over our present squad).

we can beat anyone at the Etihad on our day , we are that good . But taking on Barca at the Nou Camp , we would have to be very very lucky to walk away from there and still get through

I was lucky enough to be in the Camp Nou a couple of years ago when we beat them 0-1 in their Joan Gamper Trophy. Petrov scored the goal after a great pass from Ireland, but apart from one other chance for Bellamy right at the death we just couldn't get the ball.

Having said that, and after watching how Madrid have really pressed them in the two legs of the Spanish Supercup, they do have a slight weak side to their game: they need the ball and if they don't have it they are not quite so brilliant. The problem is that they've still managed to score 5 goals against Madrid in two games, even though they haven't played well at all.

On Monday, Swansea had a lot of possession but couldn't do anything constructive with it. Give Barcelona the same amount of possession and they will murder you.

Bring it on! We need to play these sorts of teams if we ever want to be recognised as one of the top teams in Europe.
