Rag trying to tell me it was only 35k. I can fucking swear it was more :S I have distinct memories of it when I was younger, had to be more.

Considering it only held around 35k at the time and seeing as it was mostly full-ish I think the Scummer may be right

capacity in 2003 was just over 35k, in the mid 90's it would have been slightly less as the open stands and other temporary seating areas would not have been constructed then, so more likely closer to 30k than 35k imo

yeah the scumbags right, well think it was between 32,000 and 35,000

Man my memory can't be that fucked up. There had to be more people able to fit in that thing.

95-99 would have been mostly seated so around 30k-34k seems more accurate.

debt trafford was 48,000 before they did their upper tiers and always knew Maine Road was about 15,000 less than that on average.

but when i was a kid, had a t-shirt that had some city history stats, one was Maine Road's highest attendance, which was against Stoke and was 85,000 .... in 1934 or something. BRING BACK STANDING!! get those spacestation beds instead of seats so everyone can stand in safety lol

Don't forget how the Swamp only had attendences of 35k circa '93, which is pretty poor considering the ground held a lot more even then. Pretty much sums up how the plastics came along...

it was around 32k, which slowly crept up to around 35k when we finally moved to eastlands with the introduction of the gene kelly stands
And tell yer rag mate to fuck off. I would take 32k proper supporters over 76k muppets anyday

Up until 1994 when we had the Kippax (not that sham of one that was built afterwards), Maine Road held about 60000. I remember derby games between 89-92 getting 55000 and one game against Liverpool getting 51000.

But then when Taylor ruined Enish football stadiums and proper stands had to be knocked down we got season averages between 26-34000 until we left that ground in 2003.

if its capacity your after it was only 35,150 when we left the place in 2003,
segregation brought it down a little in real terms, 32/3/4+ was regular towards the end

but between 95-99 there was no gene kelly or the other stand they put between the kippax and platt lane so in that era was probably around 32k ?

some attendances around 99 though were averaging about 24k

You're miles out there, there were only 43,000 at the 5-1, Maine Road hadn't held 50k since the 70s. The Liverpool game will be 1988 and about the 44k for that, it's all on the MCFC Stats page

Even with Swales knocking a few thousand off the crowd, there were never over 50k, the place couldn't hold that many

looks a good site but sadly not updated in nearly 2 years :-(<br /><br />-- Wed Aug 31, 2011 5:57 pm --<br /><br />looks a good site but sadly not updated in nearly 2 years :-(

I always remember Tyldsley saying "55thousand" on my 5-1 video! And - although before my match going time as I was only young - I've always been told that game against Charlton when we won 5-1(?) and got promoted there were more than that?! I'll have to go on a computer and check out that site at some point (it doesn't work on my phone).

Not much higher than 32,000. A few more when the temporary stands came in

It got upgraded from 48k to 60k so I'm told in the mid 90's, so they were having 13k empty seats in the first two seasons of the old Premiership, not forgetting that the numbers rose but then dropped again after Blackburn won the title. The figures are in the City programme every derby day, they get Rags stuttering every time.

Ah I see what you've done there, you believed Clive Tyldesley, a schoolboy error. You're right there though, my video says the same thing.

The problem really was the capacity of the Kippax being gradually reduced, so it was the same stand as 20/30/40 years before but nowhere near as many allowed in. It still looked "full" as terraces don't have the same issue of conspicuous empty seats. You getgames like the 5-1, Charlton promotion game, even Luton in 1983 and the place looked as full as it did in the early 70s, but in reality there were a lot less there sadly.

It was about 32-35k during the 90s actually - intro of seating=less capacity and construction of new Kippax limited capacity etc.

In the 70s, with the old Platt Lane and the North Stand with seats the capacity was always given as 52,000, with 26,000 being in the Kippax.

Over the years the capacity was reduced as regulations meant that the Kippax was not allowed to hold as many, so even before the new Platt Lane and Kippax stands were built the capacity was down to about 45,000.

When I was a boy in the late 60s I remember derby matches at both Maine Rd and OT having 63,000 sell out crowds, but that was when Maine Rd had the massive scoreboard end terrace and not the dinky North Stand which replaced it.
