(Sorry for the slightly deceitful title. As ever, fully understand if Mods prefer to move this to the General Board…although there are plenty of City links here!)
Maine Road F.C.’s stunningly good season finished last night at the seaside with a 4-2 win over AFC Blackpool. See the action and some excellent goals here……

With pleasing symmetry, this means the club (like City)will hopefully finish Runners-up in the NWCFL Premier Division. When this best ever position is combined with an unlucky semi-final defeat in the Challenge Cup and several other mini-cup runs, all concerned with the club should feely truly proud of their achievements this season. Not bad for a team that started out in 1955 as City Supporters (Rusholme) in the Rusholme Sunday League!
Only the top team gets promoted and that honour will fall to Padiham. Had Road gone one step further and been the team going up, they would be in Step 4 of the Non-League pyramid. To put that in perspective, Stockport County are now going down to Step 2. One more promotion and one relegation for each and they would have been playing each other!!!
All should be aware however that had we managed to go that one step further and win the league, then in fact, we could still not have been promoted to the Evo-Stick North Division as we could not finance the necessary ground improvements.
Obviously, the Maine Road FC Committee will be working hard over the next few months to try and ensure that funds are in place should we be in a similar position next year. This is always a difficult project, but given we are to lose our main sponsor Reeds Rains next season the task becomes even harder. We remain totally indebted to Estate Agents Reeds Rains for their tremendous support over the last few years, particularly given the ongoing property recession and we would always recommend followers and staff at Maine Road FC use their services. However, the hunt is on for someone to take their place, so if you have any ideas, please forward them to the club. Sponsorship of any size will be embraced willingly, be it £25 to become a ‘Friend of Maine Road F.C.’ or of the four figure type sum we had from Reeds Rains.
It is important to add at this stage that some City Supporters Clubs have been very helpful to us over a number of years. Honourable mention must go to Reddish Blues, Didsbury Blues and Dublin Blues. Ex-players such as Willie Donnachie, Dennis Tueart, Ian Mellor, Frank Carrodus and Fred Eyre (for City Former Players Association) have also joined our ‘Friends’ scheme, as have Ian Stapleton, Chris Bird and Dave & Sue Wallace.
This sort of Blue Support is so appreciated, but more is now badly needed. Any help, financial, brainpower, whatever…all will be gratefully received…..Thanks!
