Maine Road - the place where we dreamed

Nope you've got me mate......???

In honesty I don't care how shit the stands looked. I loved the place, just loved it. No matter how hard I try I just cannot generate the same feeling for the Etihad. I want to I just can't. Doesn't change my love of the club I just don't feel the same about the place. Had to happen though. Loved the vid and the song after it. My biggest smile of today. Thank you.

I too have affectionate memories of Maine Road but we've moved on and progressed. Has anyone been to where the ground was since? I haven't. I'm unsure I could.

Love the place.. not ashamed to say i still miss it.

I went back twice a week every week for 6 months (stop laughing!!) during demolition, to take a billion photographs.. Got let in once, had a pic sat where the centre circle was and also stood where i reckon my seat was (ish) on the kippax ;)

Had the centre spot pic as my season card last season - i'm a glutton for sad memories ;)

I walked right across Moss Side on the day we won the PL in May 2012. Didn't have a ticket for the match, unfortunately. It was a kind of pilgrimage. I was really, really shocked by seeing this (last photo). It made me think of the Trotsky in Red Square treatment, where he was just airbrushed out of all the photos after going into exile. It's incredible to me that there's just no trace of us there. No plaque, no statue, nothing. Times we live in, I suppose.

Isn't there a plaque or something where the centre spot used to be, or did I just dream that

Watching that reminded me how absolutely shite Swales Platt Lane stand was.
All of the developments of our brilliant old stadium were worse than what was there before.

It went from this:

For people like my Grandad who saw Maine Road when it was great back in the 30s/40s/50s to see how it looked by the end must have been frustrating. And most of the seating and two of the stands were almost brand new by the time we left so it was hardly like it was a crumbling old ground - just a shit one!

well that took me back.
it was an unbelievable journey through almost 40 years for me. I was in tears at the last game. sat where I once stood with my man and my dad from 1965 onwards. both not with us now of course but they absolutely loved city, how they afforded to take me at times i'll never know. now I take my kids (lol) and my grandson to every home game and as many away games as poss, I will saviour that for all time. we'll be in Gladbach Tuesday and I can't wait. many many families will have been exactly the same. that's city you see, its about people, sure a title win here and there is great but in truth its nothing over walking to the stadium with my grandson clutching my hand and holding on through the crowds. his face when we score is most likely just what I was like in my first season.

here's to 50 plus years for him to enjoy.

Great post Bill. My little lad is 2 and a half years old and has been to three games this season - hoping it transpires into a lifetime of memories for him when he is older!
