Man City the entertainers, Villa the time wasters

I always say this. I dont pay watch there goaly take 5 mins for a goal kick.

refs come in for stick, some justified, some not, but it pisses me off when they dont hurry the goaly up

It needs addressing

Said this a thousand times, have a designated timekeeper so when play stops, clock stops.

The clock can be visible to the fans counting down each half of say 40 mins proper inplay football.

Timewasting as a tactic would be pointless, and it would be fun watching someone take a 45 yard shot with three seconds left before the hooter sounds.
Nail on head

Over the years I've seen PL players getting faster, work harder, run more. At the same time things like head injury breaks, timeouts for hot weather, slight knocks nowadays getting treated, better match tactical management so that players get a break. I think it's natural that they take more of a break due to the vastly increased tempo.
It takes 3 hours to play a 60 minute NFL game, that should tell you all about how much time wasting there is in football.

And we probably have the most bookings for alleged timewasting lol
Yep genuinely this. Our bookings for this are scandalous. It’s analogous to opposition thugs hacking fuck out of Silva’s ankles unpunished for 88 mins and then he innocuously trips one of em up and gets an instant yellow card

But the point is that if the play stops for whatever reason, including those you've listed, THE CLOCK STOPS!
The time wasters still have to play 90 minutes irrespective of their noses running, socks fallen down, a dirty stain on their nice clean boots, etc, all of which require the urgent intervention of the coaching staff. Take as long as you want - the clock has stopped. When you feel a bit better, we'll carry on. If it's an away match, you might miss the last train back, but, hey ho, such is life.
They'll soon get fed up with it when reality bites, as will their managers.
And look on the bright side - no more bookings for time wasting!

I said that I agreed with the suggested process, and I do think a timekeeper would help, but if you don’t think that the repeated stop start in play has a detrimental affect, regardless of there being a time penalty or not, then you don’t watch the football that I do.

So, yes, a timekeeper would ensure a minimum number of minutes of play and, yes, that would be an improvement. But IMO it wouldn’t in itself eradicate time wasting type activities (slow goal kicks and throw ins / players pretending to have cramp etc). because those tactics break up the rhythm of play and that is a general tactical aim of the less skilled sides.

Be 80 minutes if refs did their job properly
It's the coaches and management who are mostly to blame, we call it time wasting they call it game management. I'd be interested to see how much time goalkeepers waste, throw-ins can also be frustratingly used to waste time.

Agree about the disruptive effect of time wasting. Whenever we’re struggling to break teams down or even losing it’s infuriating how often so little play goes on between the 60 minute mark and 86ish. Then there’s a late flurry.
Keepers are the worst. Like when there’s a 4 minute stoppage for a bullshit injury then only when the ref signals the restart does the keeper start faffing around preparing to take the kick, then has a drink, before spotting the ball. Taking another minute of time to decide whether to play short or as eventually happens wave everyone forward for a hoof. That ones usually played out around late 70 minutes. Can waste about 6 minutes all in if ref can delay bringing on trainers. Burnley or some such shithouses were doing it from the first minute recently. Winds me up. Could say It’s like clockwork!

If you think about it those times are an average so against us the figures would be much lower... Burnley v Soton yesterday championed as a great advert for the PL on MOTD.. end to end attacking football apparently.

That may well have been the case as we only saw snippets but by the same token when have pundits ever called out timewasting properly? Apart from of course Eddie.
