Man City v Millwall 1999..Memories..

What a creepy old shithole Millwalls former ground at Cold Blow Lane was ....... you were constantly having to look over your shoulder , it was never a good place to visit.

I recall going there when a guy named Tony Adcock got our winner ....... it kicked off before that game too!

I was at the New Den game when this all kicked off, with City getting a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw. Bad atmosphere even on the train on the way to the ground, then became quite obvious that all eyes of the lovely Millwall fans were on us rather than the game.

After an hour-and-a-half of City fans being locked in the away end whilst the Millwall 'fans' had a bust up outside, we were escorted to the station. One special memory was of approx 1000 City faithful on the station platform when a lovely Millwall fan shouted from the bottom of the railway embankment "come on you fuckers, I'll take you all on!". Oh how we laughed!

The next 2 games against them were legendary, especially the 3-2 away win with no away fans allowed, and SWP bowing to the non-existant City support. Classic!

I watched that at Maine Road via a giant screen on the pitch ..... 5,000 of us showed up in the only stand open , the Kippax ... it was all a bit eerie , but that was some goal that SWP scored!

The Macintyre documentry is on the Internet that shows most of it, he was shitting it and Millwall brought a few other firms with them because they knew wouldn't be easy here.

I remember it well as I was bottom corner of the kippax next to the north stand.

It was Millwall`s biggest trip of the season, so loads of old heads played out. Danny Baker had done his bit stirring it up on the radio, he boasted on air that this would be Millwall`s biggest turnout in years.
Fair do`s it was a good mob, but not a patch on Chelsea in that Friday night game, 83 or 84 I think ? That was the night Cockneys took over City, Platt Lane was an absoloute nightmare on the way to the game.

Stems from millwall away 1987 when City took two firms there,1 lot on train+1 lot of mainly young guvners on a coach that got wrecked+got to the game at near half time,City more than held their own down there, plus they won 1 nil with Tony Adcock getting goal+they didn,t like it,when they came in 99 as been said they had a rentamob out with knobheads from Reading/Oldham+god knows where else with them. The coach was ran by Mikey Williams (RIP)the tout

Got any links to that documentary? I don't think I've ever seen it.

This was the game my username came from. I just got the year wrong!

That day it was all lads. We took no more than 1000 and 95% were 16-35.We were attacked at the turnstiles and the kept in for 45 mins or so after the game.

It kicked off before and after at London bridge station.

Scary place to go in the 80's.

Fisticuffs with Utd fans in the North Stand in the 5-1 was the only time I saw any fighting in the North Stand.

Chelsea last game of 2001? That was proper 'toe to toe' as they call it.

Memories of that particular Millwall game were the seats flying, a tasty atmosphere all day and Rusholme getting smashed up after the game - by City fans I am sure I heard later.

I also remember the 1-1 game at theirs. I think it was Tony Vaughan who equalised in the 90th minute. Royle fancied his chances of snatching the win, but as someone else has said he thought we wouldn't have got out alive as they had invaded the pitch. The same kid who was pictured crying in the national media when we went down at Stoke was in the MUEN saying he was chased for a mile after the game... poor sod!

Also remember under Keegan beating them with 10 men after Ali B was sent off in the first 10 minutes. The whole of Maine Road was singing "No-one likes you because you're shit" and they were watching it on a beamback at the Den. Happy days.

-- Sun Aug 28, 2011 12:34 am --

Fisticuffs with Middlesbrough yobs too , as they came into the City section of the North Stand late one game , i think City won 2-0 ...... i think that was the day that a nasty mob of them came walkin' down Wilmslow Road and trashed the Clarence pub ........ i came out of a pub just off Claremont Road and walked right into them , as the cops tried to herd them towards the ground !

Barnsley in the FA cup. I think it was the first game they had away fans in the North Stand. Somebody had forgotten their fans could just wander into the same bar as us a t Half time. Next minute they all come piling in singing their songs, they looked as surprised as us, next minute it all goes off and theres cops flying in from the stairs behind us.

I went to the New Den once. Our Division Two Season in 1998/9. Got very nasty after the game. The Millwall fans were fighting amongst themselves as we were kept locked in for over an hour.

My sister lives round the corner and she picked me up after the game. Only slight deviation from the plan is that I had to get in the car as it was still moving as I was being chased by a load of Millwall fans.

Ah memories.

My brother in law who is an arsenal fan told me that the week after that ^ was aired The North Bank sang " 'arry The Dog is a poodle."

I thought Millwall took issue with an excerpt from Mickey Francis' Guvnors book, when it was implied they turned them over at the old ground in the late 80's.

I know a City fan who went in the Millwall end for that closed door game at The New Den. He didn't cheer when SWP scored otherwise it's debateable he'd still be around to tell the story.

I was listening on the net and the very young sounding City commentator who I'd never heard before kept going on about how threatened he felt and a few minutes before the end said he really had to go as he'd been clocked and then dropped the mic (clunk) and that was it...you could hear the crowd noises in the background still for the remainder of the game, but he'd legged it! Often wondered what happened to him!

There was a presenter on R5 called Susan Bookbinder, who was a big blue. Her dad had not missed a game in years, so she got them both a ticket for the press box.

The next day on air, she explained how a huge, skinheaded Millwall fan in the Main Stand, stared directly at the press box and boomed out:

"We know you're here, come and face us you Manc C***s!"

Apparently the stewards didn't bat an eyelid and her dad turned a whiter shade of pale.

If memory serves me right I went Millwall away on a Tuesday Night that same season with the Droylsden branch. For a Tuesday night, it was a cracking turn out with some right nutters on board. It was manic afterwards though, me and a few lads got chased through a brickyard literally running for our lives. I have never s**t myself more than that night watching City.

The return fixture was when they turned up at Stockport station so they would avoid the police presence at Piccadilly, they allegedly attacked a number of United fans en route to Forest from there (The irony eh, United fans at Stockport). I went the Whitworth before the game and got moved on off the police saying 200 Millwall are walking down. Bulls**t i thought, how wrong could i have been though! It obviously went off inside the ground which sparked a massive reaction from the city fans, I was walking back to the Clarence when at least hundred city fans ran riot down the curry mile smashing shops ups etc....

As a younger American who has followed this club for 9 years now, these stories are awesome to hear. These are my favorite threads to sort through and imagine what it was like. There was a thread about a month back where everyone was talkin about someone their favourite Maine Road memories and stories, some of the best bedtime reading I have ever had. Keep these coming.
