Maybe he didn’t want to go high enough to see any curvature, he might have looked silly. Even at 35000 feet unless you are in a cockpit you can’t see it.

I'm glad he didn't succeed. Ive just spent a month doing a course on astro navigation so I can now use a sextant to find my position when I'm sailing. If he was right i would have wasted my time and money :-)
