The judicial system is a bit fucked. I share the opinion that, admittedly without all the facts the jury have seen and heard, these guys should be locked up for a while. But look at the recent teenage rape cases in Hampshire and the North East. Victims as young as 14 fell prey to attackers younger and/or a few years older. The perps got rehabilitation orders and £26 financial penalty.
So yeah, justice isn't being served and victims aren't being protected across the board.
And to add to that, there are a lot less crimes committed today than 30 years ago, in fact it’s fallen 77% from the mid 1990s. That said, some crimes aren’t reported as much as they previously were. It’s not completely out of the question I guess (so not quite 100%!) but to get a silk to defend you on legal aid you would need a legal aid order from a court because a KC’s brief fee and daily refresher are discernibly higher than a junior’s (about double at a guess) although no more than a few grand in total, even based on a retrial.
