Absolutely incredible achievement arguably peps greatest given the circumstances with no pre-season, congested fixture list, injuries to 2 main strikers, departure of d.silva and VAR still being absolutely useless. 3 turning points of the season for me though were
1. The signing of Dias- Arguably the most important signing of peps reign. With the departure of kompany which was hugely felt the previous season and inconsistencies/injuries of stones, this had to be right and the board and everyone involved in his signing knocked this out of the park. Imo his sheer mentality has been as much a factor in the teams fortunes in the league and champions league especially as anything and at just 23 you are looking at someone who could go on to lead the club and be a true great in both the league and world football.
2. The 3-1 away win at chelsea- This was the game where it seemed something suddenly clicked for both pep and the players, The team were not out of the title race and were still getting points here and there because of its quality of players but there was a lack of cohesiveness and fluidity to the play from previous title-winning seasons and there seemed to be no direction. With aguero and jesus' injury to add to the mix, pep decided to switch the approach and play with basically no identified forward. What ensued was a marvel to witness and contributed to a run of 15 wins in a row which effectively secured the league by march.
3. Last but not least gundogan- Without doubt my player of the season. The change in approach that pep made in that chelsea game effectively allowed for a more fluid system which would allow gundogan more freedom to join in attacks and boy what a difference it made to both him and the team. He's always had the ability but that change seemed to have given him the confidence to play his more natural game which is an incredibly intelligent player both on and off the ball who can contribute in all facets of the play from defence to attack. His form during the 21-game winning run was a revelation and should be all the proof for others to never write off a top player whose form dips or isn't performing to their full capabilities.
There have been many other factors that has contributed to this like foden flourishing to be the player we all know he can be, john stones regaining his confidence and becoming who the club paid 50m for, mahrez showing everyone why he was POTY in a title-winning season for leicester and plenty others but the 3 I outlined were the most important points/changes for what could end up to be a season for the history books. Now to go on and put the icing on it with a champions league victory.
