Manchester City v Leeds United 1971

He was terrible everyone I knew used to call him Big Daft Joe
I’m sure I’m right that we sent him for extra coaching with Harry Gregg when he was at Shrewsbury or maybe Crewe
He was perhaps given the jersey a bit too soon and made some daft mistakes in televised matches which made him a figure of fun for a while.
City brought in Keith Macrae to challenge or replace him and Joe upped his game proving that sometimes you have to give a player a bit of patience and you will be rewarded eventually.

I remember that game as it was the first time I saw City lose at home. Before that day I had been to Maine Road about 20 times and stupidly thought I was a lucky charm.
