City beat Gunners in Far East

Premier League champions Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-0 in their pre-season friendly at Beijing's National Stadium on Friday.

Roberto Mancini may be concerned about the state of his City squad but on the evidence of Friday's high-profile friendly against Arsenal, Arsene Wenger has more to worry about.

Two goals in three minutes from Pablo Zabaleta and Yaya Toure at the end of the first half allowed a City squad still lacking its Euro 2012 contingent to claim victory in a game that ended in monsoon conditions, with large pools of water appearing across the pitch.

In contrast, Wenger had most of his senior players available, although Robin van Persie was an obvious absentee, having been left at home amid massive speculation about his future.

Van Persie has refused to sign a contract extension with the Gunners as he harbours serious reservations about their ability to compete with City and the Premier League's big guns.

And the calm manner Mancini's men swept their opponents aside in the Bird's Nest stadium, which four years ago was playing host to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, underlined Van Persie's point.

Of course, Wenger will play down the significance of the outcome.

It is true Arsenal are not as far advanced in their preparations for the new campaign as City and that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's introduction triggered a much-improved second-half showing.

However, there did appear to be a gulf in class at times as the rain swept into the Chinese capital, and no obvious sign that a 19-point gap between the teams last season is likely to be closed to any great extent.

With Toure taking command and 20-year-old Israeli Nir Biton impressing, Arsenal were restricted to a couple of decent Theo Walcott efforts before the interval, although they enjoyed the lion's share of possession.

City had to wait until the 41st minute to get their opener though, as Zabaleta strode up on the overlap and drove home Toure's inviting pass.

Toure scored his side's second on their next attack as Sergio Aguero turned Aleksandar Kolarov's cross into the path of the Ivorian, who stabbed home from close range.

Wenger introduced Oxlade-Chamberlain at the break and the England man immediately made an impact, hitting both posts with a fizzing shot that eventually bounced away to safety after Gervinho had gone close.

With both sides making changes, the contest began to lose its fluency.

Content to play on the counter-attack, City should have grabbed a third when Carlos Tevez squared to Aguero.

The South American chipped over Lukasz Fabianski but the ball dropped wide.

Oxlade-Chamberlain flashed another shot narrowly wide near the end.

Wenger was satisfied with the performance and felt the scoreline had failed to do Arsenal justice.

"It was lively and both teams tried to play. We were quite dominant in the first half but suddenly found ourselves down 2-0 against the run of play," he said.

"City played on a very solid defence with five real defenders and we played forward without calculating too much.

"We were a bit vulnerable on the counter-attack and that is where we got caught.

"But overall what is important for us is to see everybody play and give everybody competition. We lasted 90 minutes at quite a good level."

I watched the game online ,my time 8am
thought we played ok,not expecting much @ this stage
Zabs looks like a shoe in for Micah's spot
Savic looked alittle more self assured
Panties looks like a sound back up.......( how tall is that guy ....?)
Razak looks like he might make the bench if we dont buy in the next 3 weeks.
Arsenal played like Arsenal....chickens with their heads cut off .........Run run run ..
Chamberlain will replace Walcott, Nice moves for a Kid....shows alot of promise
Might look good in Sky Blue in a couple of years..

the bird's nest looked to be split about 75% gooners 25% blues, but we know who had the last laugh

its shocking writting to be honest. Not because City isnt better than Arsenal. But we are talking about a pre season friendly where both teams had mixed teams and both created alot of chances. lets say if Arsenal took some of theirs and won the game. This writing would be crisis at City and Arsenal shows they can challenge City

Any locals supporting city?
Was at the game today

Only cam across three Arse fans of European extraction where as there was quite a large group of City, over thirty of us in Paddy O'Shea's at one point.

On the way to the stadium there was lots of arsenal/Chinese but a fair few city inside although lots more with arse tops.

Lad sat in front of us with a brand new arsenal shirt on with the price tags sticking out. Think he was going to taking it back and swap it for a city one later!

Lots of knock off city and arsenal tops for sale outside the ground.

Best bit of the day was going for miles to a secluded spot on the Great Wall when two Korean Arsenal fans turned up. So I stood next to them and got my new away kit out and they grimaced slightly. Then I turned it round so they could see "CHAMPIONS 12" on it, and they looked so fed up hahahahaha. Had my photo took holding up the shirt with them looking on.

After the game the water was flooding down into the subway like a river. It was just like being back home with all the rain.

-- Sat Jul 28, 2012 1:48 am --
