Manchester Pubs .....fave and worst.

the orange grove is the other closed down now Frenny os a great boozer
 
I rarely drink,or even go out,these days but my favourites were The Town Hall Tavern and Sams and,even though it has strong Rag connections....Mulligans,for the black stuff!
 
The Friendship in fallowfield is a great still consider it my local even thought I've moved to swinton after grown up in M14
In town I love the Turks head and crown and anchor and even the Millstone
The Fletcher moss in Didsbury is a belter

and special mention to the Park hotel in monton and the Wagon in irlan on the height 2 belting pubs

My grandad used to live The Cricketer's. Not literally but he may well have. I don't think I ever darkened its door and, of course, long demolished now along with The Magpie further up the road.

Sad about Mother Macs. Didn't know that was closing. My uncle lived in Denton and this was his local in the 60s and 70s for some reason and I had never been in until late last year after many times of trying as it was always seemingly closed even though people were obviously inside. So this day we were looking in and the door opened to let someone out and I asked if they were open. After suspiciously looking my wife and I up and down this guy gave us the nod and we went in. A real shame that a gritty back street boozer will be lost.

Both built around the same time, I reckon. Spent the first year of my life in a maisonette a stone's throw from the Cricketer's just off Bradford Road.

It used to be called the Wellington but everyone knew it as Mother Mac's and the name name was changed officially. Mother Mac's grandson is a big Blue.

Sad to hear it has gone, a lot of history in that pub. I believe 'Father Mac' was such a big bloke that they could not get his body down the stairs and he had to be lowered out of window down to the street.
 
GDM - my mum and dad both lived just off Holland Street in the 60s before they met each other. Both grandparents lived there till their end.

Didn't know that about Mother Macs MB. Good information. Of course I recall the murders there and the stories adorn the wall of the pub today..

Has anyone been in The Pie and Ale in Manchester just off Lever Street? I "discovered" it last Sunday after a little tour of my favourites as I was heading to Gullivers on Oldham Street for a nightcap and I liked it. Seemed to hazily recall they served a nice pint of London Pride! Didn't even know it existed.

I called in before the Kiev game. The landlord told me, he's retiring. He thinks it's going to be turned into a bar/ hotel. 30 years he's been there.

A shame go in from time to time and always enjoyed a pint or two. Is it brewery owned or will it be sold off independantly I wonder would be good to stay as a traditional boozer after he retires
