Manchester - so much to answer for....

This thread is a mine of useful information. Quite pround to be a Mancunian. Which got it's name from the word Mamarian meaning breast, the shape of the two hills, Chude hill and Cheetham hill and Then there is Deansgate after the word Danesgate. Not to sure but something to do with the Danes/Vikings I think............

The only city in the world with a music venue named after a repeal of a law. The Free Trade Hall. Understandably it was a shit law imposed by the Tories.

Also it is the cradle of communism.

Shame the Labour Council couldn't be arsed saving such an historical building and allowed it to be pulled down (façade apart) and turned into a 5 star hotel.....

Was it not left empty when The Halle moved? Bar the Judas shout, probably its most famous moment, but those in the know, refer to manctheknife getting his O Level cert awarded on stage there in 1977. It was the third one.

and The Sex Pistols gigs upstairs in the Lesser Free Trade Hall!
A young Winston Churchill spoke there, when one of the Pankhurst daughters was arrested for standing up and speaking (which women were not allowed to do then) and her friend was arrested after gobbing on a policeman trying to remove them.

It was left empty after they moved out but the council ran it into the ground, refused to get it repaired. Too much asbestos they said.
