Manchester Tart

Every tuesday dinnertime at school, I remember the custard top used to slide off the pastry....did it have dedicated coconut on the top or am I thinking of something else..

'Dedicated coconut on top'...

Loyalty is a rare thing in the world of coconuts.

;-)

Banana?!? That’s not the real deal.
At my school we didn’t even get coconut on it. Straight up crust, cold custard and the world’s thinnest layer of jam.
My dear old gran was a dinner lady at my junior schoo. She made the puds in massive trays. Always saved me the corners from manc Tart, egg custard, rice pud with a crust and proper jam cornflake tarts.
On the walk to school I'd get a currant slice for brekky.

Think it might have only been my school that served it but we used to have what they called Argentina Roll for dinners, it was like jam roly poly but instead of jam it had corned beef in it, served with mash, veg & gravy. I liked it but never met anyone else who knew of it, probably our dinner ladies being creative.
You lucky bastard! That sounds fuckin amazing:)

I will be honest, never heard of tge banana/jam/custard cold thing until 2007, we never had it in our school in the 80s, our dinner ladies used to call cornflake pie Manchester pie in gorton.

was told its a newton heath/blackley thing mainly

I'm sure it was suet, that's how I'm planning to do it anyway, never used it before, will have to look it up, Atora is a name that rings a bell but I don't know if you have to mix it, learning curve.
Save us a big dollop then hey :)

It was decent, in fact I'm going to try making it next week, might as well make a jam roly poly as well.

One part suet to two parts self raising flour and steam in tin foil and a tea towel for 40 minutes it's just a big fat dumpling really.

Use more jam than you think you need tough it'll take it :)

Sayers do the best Manchester tarts known to man. They’re something else, I tell you!

There aren’t many Sayers bakeries around though, unfortunately. There are only the Timperley, Daveyhulme and Partington (and, further out, Littlebrough and Knutsford) shops in the local area.
