Manctopia on BBC2

Lots of people die and move out too......?

What are NET migration figures? 270,000 in?

Whatever we need to build more houses. Not just for profit.

For years there have been housing shortages.

It's a complicated issue.
Population growth and people dont want to live in terrace housing anymore. people aspire to live in new detached housing or inner city apartments.

I aspired to live in a detached house but had to start in a terraced.
No one in their right mind apart from some of generation Z would want to live in an inner city apartment.

If anything the show has really highlighted how disgraceful our local housing situation is.

In ep.3 those squatters made a great point about how there's always more empty buildings. I'd like to see a law in place whereby any property (residential or commercial) that is un-occupied for a defined period of time (perhaps 3 years) it is repossessed by councils.

We can argue 'why' there's a housing crisis all we want, but the fact of the matter is we're deep in one. It's outrageous that so many people sleep without a roof over their heads when there are hundreds of buildings left empty. Clearly putting these people up in BnB's is not a long term solution, so I'd like to see the likes of Andy Burnham pull his finger out and spearhead REAL solutions.

We have a housing crisis because of the amount of people entering the UK, same as waiting hours at the doctors or hospital.

In my opinion, we have a housing crisis because our government has lacked forethought and preparation to facilitate a growing population.

Without immigration, we'll simply be unable to fund pensions for our ageing population. It's a clear lack of planning by national gov and local councils that have led us to this position.

We NEED immigrants to contribute within our workforce - which means, by default, we NEED more affordable housing and other infrastructure to deal with a growing population.

Yeah no problem. I'm one of those who acknowledges the City of Salford being it's own thing. I work with a lot of student who rent in Salford who seem to think it's just a district of Manchester, you see. I'm astonished that they don't see the significant difference that two cities can be 1 mile apart from each other.

No shame in being a Salford Blue, especially when you consider we have Scottish Blues, Welsh Blues, Australian and American Blues. :)

Back in the day Manchester was actually a district of Salford.

Lots of immigrants stay get married and have children. They also all get old so we need more immigrants to pay for well immigrants and the old who may also be immigrants or not. This ponzi scheme you are describing isn't a solution just a band aid that suits politicians and businesses.

Where you putting these social housing estates? I wouldn't want one at the end of my road and I'm from several generations of working class stock.

The % of 1 and 2 people households rising from around 40% to 65% in 50 years, and the related factor of people living longer is more a factor than migration for me.

The more services you provide for rough sleepers and those at risk of rough sleeping, the more you attract into the city. You can house everybody and there will be ones who are evicted or abandon very quickly due to their own behaviour, possibly mental health related, substance misuse, PD, border line LD, or just behavioral. Build everyone a new house, some won't use their benefit to pay their rent and end up evicted, or smash the place up so no one else wants to house them, or set something on fire and end up to high risk for even a hostel. Pump in a trillion quid in the next 5 years and people will still be homeless.

It's a complex issue to be fair and immigration is one part and there are others. The system works for just enough people to benefit that it will continue.

There is enough money and assets in this country to cope with a non increase in population. Not concreting green belt., improving the environment and having less stress in our lives.

I think I mentioned earlier in the thread. The housing ‘crisis’ isn’t really a crisis at all, it’s by design

Our economy is based on supply/demand of the housing stock. A delicate balance but a balance nonetheless

We’ll be having the same conversation in another 20 years

We have a housing crisis because the witch sold the affordable ones. I would have taken advantage myself. Who wouldn't. We need big council estates that cannot be sold off

Billions is being spunked on HS2. Cancel and spend it building housing for cheap rent. Problems solved.

On any land that can built on. An example is abutting new bypass roads like Alderley Edge. It's just fields doing nothing. Stuff green belt. It's bollocks unless a national park.

Wow a country with less countryside and more cars more pollution more commute times. You want to put a council estate next to alderly edge in a field?

Yes. Don't obey the rich. We need houses and have loads of fields.

Had a wander for the first time for a while around the City today, most bizarre are the 3 blocks of apartments being built opposite the cathedral that appear to block each others light. Strangeways and the designer " traders" close by seem unchanged likewise a couple of artisan sauna facilities in Ancoats otherwise its quite breathtaking and definitely unique outside London.

Yes America has loads of fields and free spaces but New York LA etc are gridlocked. Put a housing estate next to alderly edge and people move away from alderly edge.

People go where the money and jobs are so putting up estates on the Moors is pointless. People work hard buy houses in nicer areas then you put a council estate there. Why work hard you can blag a free house in a posh area but then it ain’t posh anymore.

Simple answers fail because they are simplistic. I’m from collyhurst gorton and Clayton stock. If these areas were wonderful then no one would pay stupid money for hale.

Houses spread out from congested areas. 15 min commute 70s, 30 mins 80s etc. Manctopia people get pushed out from the city centre, ardwick beswick Clayton droylsden. Before you know it you’re London and spending an hour on crowded public transport getting to work and paying silly money. If your lucky to be closer you have no quality of life and shit air.

Like a cancer it spreads outwards you want to infect a larger area. Think on.

Still strikes me as one big advert for capital and centric. And ADUG are bigger influencers on this program (North of Ancoats) and they've only touched on that briefly.

Unless the land is next to you. Stuff you short sighted twat.
