Manctopia on BBC2

There was a load of derelict mills and brownfill land just outside the city center for decades perfect for social housing refurbs and new builds, think some have been on the show where are the new unaffodable housing now built.

But that is by the by as it's done now and investment in the area shouldn't be scoffed at, however there are still streets of terrace houses boarded up in many areas of manchester that could either be refurbished or demolished and new houses built, 6 streets down from me is a street with several cleared out crack dens and boarded up terraces, all going to waste.

Existing housing and land is around, but the will and means funance wise is probably not

I aspired to live in a detached house but had to start in a terraced.
No one in their right mind apart from some of generation Z would want to live in an inner city apartment.
Loads want a detached 3 bed new build, flash car on pcp and go out every weekend on the piss, living off credit cards, go bankrupt rinse and repeat, they can’t sully themselves to live in a terrace and work their way up, sometimes they need a reality check. When they hit their 30s and they have chucked away £120k or more in rent have no car because they are just to renting one, but have a wardrobe full of designer clothes and probably no pension maybe the reality will hit them.

Or have none of those things becuase all their wages go on paying some old cunts bills through form of rent, which is much higher than it should be.

But fuck em, greedy little cunts

i dont think rent should be allowed to be above what would be a mortgage payment on the property

Ridiculous idea.
A landlord picks up all the maintenance costs that an owner is responsible for.
And what rate of interest on your nominal mortgage payment.
SVR?
1 year fix rates, or 2 or 5 or 10?

Fairly obvious reasons, everyone just ends up in the rut of paying someone else’s bills. The landlord can afford a deposit as they can remortgage there house, whilst the peasants have to pay high rents and don’t have anything left over to save a deposit.

I’m 31 and the only people I know my age that own a house have had deposits given to them as either loans from parents or wedding presents, etc. If you’re single you’re knackered as you’d have to be earning a lot to pays these rents and save a deposit.

Not everyone is wearing designer gear or going out every weekend either.

Just what I’ve seen and noticed

Haha have you seen the state of most rental houses, the landlords don’t tend to “jump to it” when something needs sorting.

I’m guessing you’re a landlord? Lucky you

There are plenty of sites around to build on........one site near me was banked by developers years ago on Colmore Ave near the old Clough Hotel. Never built on since 2008 when it was fenced off.

That's business I'm afraid. You wouldn't expect Tescos to charge you the same for a tin of beans that they pay for the tin. We all pay someone else, it's the way of the world.

It is, but it shouldn’t be is what I’m saying.

Remember after all, Tesco can’t sell that tin of beans once I’m finished with it can they

I see so many young people and not so young paying 1300 to 1500 a month for a two bedroom flat. Crazy and stupid. Nothing wrong in living in a terraced house.

First house I owned was on Horton Road next to Maine Road.
Two up two down. Made of brick, not breeze block and stud walls.
It was an ideal starter. Well built, knocked through you got a decent sized lounge/diner.

Exactly and they want them in the best areas, unfortunately you may have to live somewhere else initially to get on the ladder, like I said they want instant everything and their way unfortunately it doesn’t work that way for your average person.

Yes America has loads of fields and free spaces but New York LA etc are gridlocked. Put a housing estate next to alderly edge and people move away from alderly edge.

People go where the money and jobs are so putting up estates on the Moors is pointless. People work hard buy houses in nicer areas then you put a council estate there. Why work hard you can blag a free house in a posh area but then it ain’t posh anymore.

Simple answers fail because they are simplistic. I’m from collyhurst gorton and Clayton stock. If these areas were wonderful then no one would pay stupid money for hale.

Houses spread out from congested areas. 15 min commute 70s, 30 mins 80s etc. Manctopia people get pushed out from the city centre, ardwick beswick Clayton droylsden. Before you know it you’re London and spending an hour on crowded public transport getting to work and paying silly money. If your lucky to be closer you have no quality of life and shit air.

Like a cancer it spreads outwards you want to infect a larger area. Think on.
I think all the time. Right to buy list all the affordable housing in the wealthy areas. The people who were postmen or butchers. I was joking but houses have to go somewhere.

Councils are set housing targets by the government they must meet. GM Spatial Framework for instance. If they don't designate sites within a five year period refused applications are overturned by Inspectors. The HBF us huge funder of the Tories. Thus the focus of Greenfield sites. Easy to develop and good prices then build slowly to sustain prices by drip feeding the market.

Not if housing was done wisely and we didn't chase false GDP figures through population increases.

If you know something is not sustainable forever and damages the environment and people's quality of life then you have 2 choices.

Say fuck.it I'll be dead when it gets really bad or

Actually try and find solutions.

Governments will always choose the first because of election cycles. The population choose governments so they are to blame at the end of the day.
