We’d say high town where I grew up (not for Manchester) but locally now I say up the high street.

I’m from Stockport and I’ve always called it town. If I was referring to Stockport centre I’d say boring shithole

Was always town to us. Still is, though my missus has begun calling where we are now town.
Used to cause me confusion when I had the misfortune to work with many inbred Biffos, and they call that shithole 'town'.
