Manuel Akanji | Rumours of an Inter loan deal

Did happen? Haha you realise people can go on YouTube and watch the highlights back and see.

Akanji just stood there dozing off letting Martinez in and luckily Ed was off his line quickly to block it. Just because you don't agree with the guys opinion doesn't mean it's made up
Akanji did play the slide rule pass to Bernardo opening up the Inter defence, whose cross deflected off an Inter player into Rodri’s path for his brilliant strike to win the CL, don’t forget that

For a deal to happen three conditions must be met:

1. City are willing to go into next season with the same number of CBs as last season (Khusa for Akanji), 2 of them being injury prone...(Reis, if he is recalled, is inexperienced at that level)

2. Akanji is ready to go to the Turkish league

3. Galatasaray are ready to pay what it takes

It is doubtful any of the conditions is going to be met. With the option we have to recall Reis, 1. is the condition most likely to be satisfied (if Pep agrees, which is not certain). Further, if Akanji is ready to leave, he might go to another English club or, say, Italy or Germany. Galatasaray seem unwilling to pay 15m for a top keeper, their willingness to pay what it takes to sign a CB in his prime from one of the best clubs in the world is highly doubtful.

I'll be surprised if this happened.
The difference being Gvardiol will play more at CB this season with Ait Nouri and O'Reilly being options at LB. So it is more options that last season in that sense.

Gvardiol was employed at CB during the injury crisis in November and December, it didn't help us.

If we go with those 5 CBs and one from Gvardiol, Dias and Khusa misses 2-3 months, we are back to relying on Stones and Ake staying fit in order to rotate between games in the PL and CL. It may cost us the league and the CL again...

If we want to have two injury prone CBs, on the wrong side of 30 at that, then we may need more CBs to cope, especially with both Nunes and Lewis not being good enough at RB in the big PL and CL games. Use Stones at RB, and he will get injured sooner than expected: FBs need to run more than CBs.

Half of our issue defensively last year was our midfield, we’ve improved massively in that regard.

I don’t see the issue personally.

LB: Ait Nouri, O’Reilly
LCB: Gvardiol, Ake
RCB: Dias, Stones, Khus
RB: Rico, Nunes

That’s as many defenders as we’ve ever had.

5 centre halves, 4 fullbacks, 4 of the centre halves can also play fullback.

What’s the chances of another freak season of injuries? Unlikey for Khus, Gvardiol, Dias to have any major injuries in addition to Stones and Ake.

Why are teams like Bournemouth and Brentford not all over him. Excellent player when fit and they both look a shambles defensively. Bournemouth needing a whole new defence. He’d be a great squad man for teams likes Spurs, Villa, Forrest.

I’d assume wages would be a potential stumbling block and not overly convinced Akanji would be keen on the move.

The injuries to Stones and Ake were expected. If we want to run that risk again, Arsenal and Liverpool may be happy.

Khusanov has a great potential, I hope so, but is he ready to play every week at the required level? Pep wasn't convinced, that's why Khusanov played very little in the CWC.

Dias was troubled by injuries as well. Is he ready to play every week at the required level? Remains to be seen, but we'll risk the season again (!) if we think we have enough bodies at CB. Would be a daft mistake to make, given the last season...

Nah we cant be having 6 CBs in the squad in any situation. If all get injured together its just shit luck and you deal with it, could happen with 7 as well. We may have clauses to recall Reis or Bah in these situations as well, but whoever is 6th in the order will be at home for 80% or more of the matchdays. Khusanov might not be ready to play every week but thats why he is 4th/5th in line and not first choice. No one who is first choice will be ready to play that role.

They sign younger players and flip them, not sure it’s sustainable for clubs like that to sign players on big wages at that age and injury record

His options are limited to Turkey or Saudi imo

It's not that simple.

First, if we are happy to have 2 injury prone CBs and if we want to avoid an injury crisis stopping us from competing for the big trophies again, then we need more CBs. The other clubs don't have two injury prone CBs, that's why they can have 4-5. Also, it remains to be seen whether Dias has completely recovered from his injury problems.

Second, our RB position is somewhat weak. Some of the CBs are expected to feature there against the best PL and CL teams, say, Stones or Khusanov. I like Nunes a lot, but he isn't a natural defender. He can be excellent against average teams, but it's risky to start him against the better teams. Same with Lewis. We need a proper defender there in the big games. Right now, only a CB can fill the position in such games with success.

Scoring the winning pen v the colostomy bags in the charidy shield means he was worth every penny of his modest fee. A bit like Laporte, generally good with a sprinkle of brain farts
