Marc Guehi | Staying at Palace

We don't need Guehi ourselves so I just hope he stays at Palace and Liverpool's defence remains dodgy

Not that it makes much difference to our season...

Michael Edwards.

He helped build Klopp's success early on and when he left in 2022 Klopp and the team regressed.

It's no coincidence now he is back the helm they are back to being very good again.

He is a very good sporting director.
He is, but you don’t have to be a genius to make those kind of signings.

Guehi £35mil, Olise £50mil release clause, James Maddison £40mil. All young, English, cheap and have good PL experience. These are players that could and should go for twice that amount. Instead, we’ve massively overpaid for players like Grealish & Nunes and then decided they’re not good enough. As for Phillips, the less said the better.

Guéhi for 35m and he comes in ready to play and improve the side. Instead we spent 60m plus on Khus, Reis and Bah non of whom are trusted to start regularly or even be in the squad. Will they come good - maybe but again it’s bad planning and bad decision making. The time for promising young players was when the majority of the squad were in their prime and playing well not the current phase we are in.

All three you list there would have been better signings than the ones we made for those positions.

100% this. That January window was a waste apart from Marmoush.

We also have bought top-class talents for significantly less. Hanging hats on Grealish and Philips is to not look at the whole picture.

I don't believe so. It may look that way at present but in Khusanov, Reis, Bah and Gvardiol, we could have top quality CB options for years to come. The first 3 just need a bit more time and experience. Hopefully they can then replace the likes of Stones, Ake and Akanji in the squad.

Echeverri is also a very promising player.

I know they are not all for the here and now but it could leave us in a promising position for the future.

I think sorting the FBs and CM is what is really needed.

Agreed. There is some serious potential in those purchases, both for now and for later. The loan watch thread will be interesting this season.

Cherki - £30m is very cheap for his level of ability.
Echeverri - 18m

I could go on and on. Certainly, even with purchases like KDB for £57m, or Vinny for £18m, we have bought some serious talent along the way that can be looked back on as excellent VFM.
Cherki has ability but 30m will only be cheap if he fulfils it same with Echeverri. Hopefully they come good but neither seem ready to impact the team and get us competing for major honours. I think we have got the balance wrong - there is a time for buying players with potential but when replacing Kev isn’t one do them. We tried to replace the best midfielder the prem has seen, our talisman for the best part of a decade with a talented but unproven maverick. The squad is vulnerable, lacks leaders and as such it is not a good place for youngsters to bed in.

Every single player in history will only be seen as good value if they perform.
There is no KDB available unless you want to spend more than 100m on a player, and even then, who would that be?

I can only hope that he made it clear early on that if he was leaving it was for Liverpool. Otherwise we are a joke for not trying to bring him in. If he only wanted Liverpool there’s nothing we can do really. Just frustrating either way
He's not commented in public however it has pretty much been the case

It could and should have been Wirtz, but we fucked it up worrying about the cost.

There are numerous high quality attacking players playing across Europe. Many of whom could improve us - many have moved in recent seasons. Equally there have been many high quality wingers who have moved should we have wanted to replace KDB by changing our style etc. fundmantelly we needed to replace his output even if it wasn’t a direct replacement in style. We haven’t but cherki may do it in a year or two. But we don’t really have that time to wait/waste.

Who is a ready made KDB?

Over the last couple of seasons our recruitment reminds me of arsenal in wenger’s last couple of seasons with very average recruitment.

Our historic success has made us somewhat complacent whilst others look very hungry and have burning ambition. I don’t think the charges have helped and we have been cautious with our spending.

I’m dreading the thought that city become like arsenal in Wenger’s last days

Cautious with spending! We have spent a shit load on players, trouble is they don’t seem Pep type players maybe that’s because it’s a long term view now rather than the next two seasons, Donurruma is not good with his feet so how’s that going to work out.
