Marc-Vivien Foe: died 22 years ago today, he'd actually be 50 if still alive.

He was on loan for his 1 season with us and isn't it correct that he wasn't being re-signed, or had returned to his parent club, Lyon when the tragedy happened? I can't remember exactly, and Wiki doesn't clarify. My memory is that nothing had been confirmed for the coming season - his death occurring in the summer.

That is correct. He wasn’t being re-signed. He didn’t have a great season with us and was actually openly mocked due to his poor heading ability.

What his family had to go through and also witness that day must have been heartbreaking for them. Such a young age and unexpected. Very sad.

However, I just struggle with the fake affection some claim to have for him. We live in strange times where online fans compete over anything, even death.

I couldn't agree more. When that season ended, my recollection was that he was unlikely to return to us and all the morbid fandom we see year after year is just so OTT and pathetically internetish.

RIP and all that but, come on - every year?

It is the same with anyone in the public eye, once they pass they are a million times better than what they were. Same here. It was horrible and I remember it like it was yesterday and them awful images doing the rounds. Wouldn't wish it on anyone and may he rest in eternal peace. No issue with City highlighting it every year, it is respectful and nothing but nice wishes to his family and friends.

He had a stinker of a first half to the season, second half he was good but the goals papered over limitations. The comparison to Yaya lazily gets made and that is insulting to Yaya. Foe had just finished a season at a team that finished 9th, he was heavily linked to rejoining Redknapp at Pompey, a team that had just gained promotion I believe, yet people talk of him being Yaya like and even on the first page of this thread saying how he would fit a Pep team. To sum Foe up, look at the goats first goal against the rags with Neville. That wild pass that was pumped towards the corner flag to nobody, was a "pass" from Foe. Obviously it was perfection how it panned out but that was in his locker. He wasn't staying with us and it was nice he scored the last goal at Maine Road and us retiring the number 23. Lets not turn him into Maradona though.

Oh god, that was horrific.

He had just had a new baby earlier in the year also.
I went to watch them train that year and he never stopped smiling.

Was strange that it happened on his home pitch in Lyon.

Far too young and I just hope his family were well looked after.

RIP , scored the last goal at Maine Road for us but never in million years was he anything like Yaya Toure not in his league in fact nowhere near it

City wanted him but the £7m option wasn't taken up and WMc his agent reckoned he had a way he could leave for nothing. T

He had improved from December onwards and finished well. He was the best midfielder at the end of the season, and had done okay overall. Scoring helped.

Absolute drivel

RIP

‘RIP’ but you’re in a thread about a player who passed away calling out other posters for complimenting him on his abilities?

No one said he was as good as Yaya, hence the term ‘prototype’ being used. It was more a compliment for his forward powerful runs and important goals from the central midfield area, something we’d not see again until Yaya came along and took it all to the next level (and more).

Do us a favour and piss off.

Powerful forward running midfielder cropping up with some big goals.

Obviously not Yaya’s level but it was something we’d not really had before and didn’t have again until Yaya came along and took it up several levels.
Very fair and nice to see you aren't daft enough to compare him to Yaya in ability, I understand what you mean after explaining. He had a purple patch for goals with us, that actually wasn't part of his game really though. 24 goals over a near 10 year career, with 9 coming in that final season with us suggests we might have got a one off season out of him, well half a season and fair play to him. Dickson Etuhu isn't a far off comparison wise though.

For all those that are saying he didn’t have a great time with us, I think you must have been watching different games to me. I remember that I was desperately hoping we were going to sign him permanently because it was obvious that he was was a very good player……just what we needed in midfield and the 9 goals in 35 appearances for a defensive midfielder says it all.

Sometimes you just read nonsense that needs to be called out - it’s rare that I bother to post but come on, if you’re not saying anything positive on a post like this one then keep it to yourself.
