Anyone doubting the media pull of Balotelli is pretty stupid. He was the only footballer in the top ten sportsperson searches on Google in 2012: http://www.google.com/zeitgeist/2012/#t ... d/athletes
He was fortunate to be in the spotlight in huge occasions. Aguero pass and Italy v Germany would've contributed a huge amount of searches.

I thought we had 100 years of history before Mario came along, must be wrong!

Give me a Shaun Goater every day of the week.

As great as he was, Goater didn't generate global headlines for our club.

Any City fan who has been abroad anywhere in the last 2 years will be able to testify that one of the first topics of conversation when a foreigner found out you were a city fan was Mario, he was fantastic for our publicity.

Absolute drivel. I travel for a living mostly Northern Europe but also the States. When mentioning City not one person has mentioned Mario.

Also never seen anyone outside of Manchester with a Balotelli shirt, Messi, Ronaldo, Beckham et al so don't believe the global exposure shite.

Fortunate enough to be in the spotlight? He put himself in the spotlight by making the assist and scoring those goals. By saying fortunate you're implying he was just there basking in the reflected glory of others. That glory wouldn't have happened without him. He was crucial to it. Balotelli has a lot of media pull, it's just flat-out denying reality to say he doesn't.

He's fortunate that his good games were watched by so many I meant.

There's a few games where he's not done well but luckily for him the games weren't as watched as QPR and Italy for example. That's my point.

I'm not denying reality. He was fortunate to score good goals or make good passes. That's self made. My point is that these moments were given more exposure than a normal game.

Maybe he thrives on the pressure of big occasions? Still wouldn't explain why he has twice as many hits on Google, or gets on the front page of TIME though.

He scored two vital goals against Sunderland last season to level things up. He got next to no recognition for that. That's my point. If you want to.see otherwise you're missing my point fella.

On google Beckham has more views than Figo. What does that say?

I wonder if you're missing the point given your point about Beckham vs Figo. This conversation is about media pull. Beckham has more media pull than Figo. A lot more. It doesn't mean he was a better player. Just that he has more media pull, which is what this conversation is about. Balotelli has more media pull than his achievements on the pitch.

I was merely alluding to an alternative point fella. For me I'd have Figo everyday. I side with better players than headline makers. Granted we miss out on exposure but exposures overrated when most media outlets publish mostly negatives.
