Spoke with Mark regularly about his time at City and sent him so pictures for his book, He's devastated about how his life spiralled out of control but dosent make any excuses for the situations he found himself in. His book is a cracking read and he always gave it his all when playing.

Ward earned £2,000 a week during his time with us !!
What did he get into?

Mark William Ward (born 10 October 1962) is a former footballer from Liverpool. He started his career as a youth player with Everton F.C. and then spent two seasons playing for Oldham Athletic.

In 1985 he signed for West Ham United and was ever-present on the right wing in his first season, as they finished third in Division 1. However, in subsequent seasons, star strikers Frank McAvennie and Tony Cottee left and West Ham were relegated at the end of 1988-89.

In December 1989 Ward signed for newly-promoted Manchester City, who had just appointed Howard Kendall as manager after falling into the relegation zone. Ian Bishop and Trevor Morley signed for West Ham in exchange. Bizarrely, Ward's first six games for City included four against Millwall. City beat them in the league on 30 December 1989 but drew twice with them in the FA Cup before losing the second replay on 15 January 1990. City rose to finish 14th, with Ward scoring his first three goals for City in consecutive games in April.

Playing mainly on the left wing, Ward only missed two games in 1990-91, scoring 13 league and cup goals as City finished fifth. He scored both goals when City beat Sheffield United in the league on 19 January 1991, and then repeated the feat three days later to knock Sheffield United out of the Full Members Cup.

In the summer of 1991 he signed for Everton, rejoining Kendall who had moved in November 1990. Ward stayed for three seasons before moving down the divisions to play for Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Ayr United, Wigan Athletic, Dundee, Valur and Altrincham FC.

[edit]Imprisonment

After the end of his football career he became involved in the supply of cocaine in Liverpool. He was arrested after 4 kg (9 lb) of cocaine were found during a raid at a house in Prescot, Merseyside, in May 2005. In October 2005 he was jailed for eight years.[1] He was released from Kirkham Prison in May 2009 having served four years, in Kirkham and in Walton Prison.[2]

Seems had his best scoring spell with us

Drugs mate. Good book well worth a read just to see how life can throw up some shit at you.

I thought Mark Ward was a decent player for Manchester City in the early 90s very good penalty taker!!!!!

Put me in the Mark Ward fan club as well. As upset as a fourteen year old as I was about Bish leaving it was obvious from the outset that Ward was a cut above what we currently had (Lake aside) and Kendal conducted an astute bit of business bringing him to the the club. IIRC correctly he'd either just played or was on the verge on an England B call up as well with senior honours expected to follow.

City fans didn't cut him a lot of slack though and it was sad to see at the time. I remember tits out jackie giving him some serious abuse the second he appeared in the tunnel to warm up with Peter Reid before making his home debut (I think against Millwall).

But what a belting little player he was and he scored some blistering goals in a City shirt, perhaps the most famous being a curling left foot shot at the Holte End that cancelled out David Platts opener in the April Fools Day win at Villa Park 1990. Peter Reids late winner (after David White had hit the post) sent the City fans mental, gave us a first away win of the season and gave us a real chance of survival.

I was sorry he left City when he did though as I felt he wasn't replaced with similar quality. Reid seemed obsessed with more defensive players but thats another story. I'm glad Mark Ward seems to have got his life back together now because like another tricky little player a few years later (Paul Walsh) I remember his time at City with a lot of fondness.

Good player.

He received some ill-deserved stick from those fans who didn't take to the crop of players Kendall imported at the time, it baffled me at the time and still does now.

He was a very direct winger, the sort that got the ball and really went for it.

He managed Altrincham back in 2001-01 but fell out with the Board and got the sack there in early 2001. I think after that for whatever reason he was considered a bit of a troublemaker on the NW Non League circuit and couldn't get another gig. I think that's where the descent into drugs began.
