Marseille Takeover Rumours

Very very strong rumours around in France that a group from United Arab Emirates royal family are about to buy Marseille. The current ruler of UAE is Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Very familiar name that ... :)

Ever since the purchase of PSG there's been big talk of more oil money moving into French football. One of the big concerns of Platini and Sarkozy in their initial meetings with the Qatari's was that they wanted a competitive league rather than just having one oil rich club dominating everything.

That's why the Qatari's have been keen to buy French based players as well as big name foreign ones, to keep both money and players within the league. It's why Al Jazeera have moved into France and have bought the rights to Champions League for this season, and will no doubt win the bid for the Ligue 1 rights next season. Previously Canal Plus had no real significant competition for the L1 tv rights, consequently they were sold relatively cheaply. With Al Jazeera wanting to be the flagship football provider on television French clubs expect their TV income to go up exponentially.

All in all I see this as only a good thing for City strangely enough. The stronger the hold that the middle east has over football/broadcasting in Europe, the more difficult it is going to be for Platini to implement FFPR in the way in which he wants. It will also provide more allies for us within Europe's footballing elite.

I'm pretty sure they've already bought Ligue 1 TV rights.

Takeover - hm.. if FFPR is going to be enforced, looks like they're late.

Nope, still Canal Plus this season. They may well have already bought the rights from next season (or the season after) but as things stand the games are still on Canal Plus.

As I said regarding FFP, going to be difficult for Platini to enforce it when he was the one who encouraged outside investment into French football.

Pardon my ignorance but what is the relationship between Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mansour?

Great news for Marseille in any case if this has substance

Yes, that's what I thought.. I'm pretty sure they've already bought the rights for future ones
