The Townley before the game - decent pint and good atmosphere

Started to go in here. The larger is good and it seems a good crack. Not seen any trouble or dicks when i've been.
Tis the only place around the ground that will serve you a pint of bitter for 2.65, smashin'.

That's me with the grey hoodie on.

And since when did football fans become alcohol coniseurs?
It's a pub which hundreds of city fans like, that makes it a good pub for me.

I think a few myths need dispelling about Mary D's - but everyone should remember that if you go in there, then you do so of your own free will - nobody makes you go there!

Firstly, I know the guy who runs the place, he isnt a red (plastic or otherwise), he is a Blue and also has a couple of bars in Failsworth.

Secondly, it hasnt been brought up on this thread (yet) but has in previously related threads, Mickey Francis has nothing to do with Mary D's in any way.

Thirdly, the lager is not watered down, its 'keg' lager and that cannot be tampered with. The only beer that can be altered is 'traditional ale' otherwise known as 'real ale' and that isnt on sale in Mary D's. It might taste weird sometimes but that is down to whether the beer-lines have been cleaned properly.

Look, its not everyones favourite but the price is ok compared to other local boozers and its staggering distance to the ground. Its up to the people that drink there to make the atmosphere...

Absolute bollocks mate, the woman who collects for the Heart Foundation is nothing to do with the pub and actually lives in Stockport. You might not like the pub but saying things like that is down right stupid.

We'll have to disagree, and I've had the conversation with the lady in question, an old dear, with obviously heart in the right place (no pun intended)

It soon became clear (on this occasion) she explained was collecting for the pub to purchase a heart de-fib, or the landlord would be forced to put a charge on the door to adhere to the health and safety.

Her argument, being what would we rather prefer?

My argument being, the landlord was a disgrace and he should not have been using her or the Heart Foundation's reputation to subsidise what he should be financing out of his own.

Im sure it said as much on the collection buckets they had at the door. I already knew it was for a de-fib and i hadn't really given it much investigation. Mary D's is what it is, it can be very shit at times but a) the grounds on its door step and b) the atmosphere at times is quality.

If it's a nice hot day then I'll go to Townley bar as it's a good pint and you can stand outside, although I do go in Mary Ds I spend more time in Eastlands bar probably because I'm mates with Paul and Mickey and it's a good pint with fast service.

I'm with you mate, I'm a Townley lad meself, much prefer a beer and chinwag with other blues than watch 16 year old swagger round the place thinking they're Guvnors.

This.
Makes me laff when they give it out over the wall at the back, then as soon as the away lot run at them they're hiding behind the proper men who then have to sort it out for them.

Mary d's is well known for this type of thing
When i was in the townley after a game one sunday, bloke at the bar said '' fuck me, shouldn't you be in mary d's mate? '' maybe I'm old before my time but i prefer a pint of john smiths with my grandad in a proper pub.

Billy, the company i work for has opened up an office in manchester, there are two lads from dublin who have relocated here in the last month. I convinced them that coming to coms would get them bitten by the city bug, as they follow gaelic football in ireland, while not particularly following any english team.

Mary d's i thought, before the match, bit of atmosphere and all that. One spotty little ****, who was smaller than the pint he held, brought it upon himself to tell one of the lads i was with that he was at "the wrong ground" and that "the munich ground was over there somewhere" pointing towards ashton/droylsden! (oh dear)
When he heard his 'heavy' irish accent.

There were a few laughs, from knuckle dragging clampits, and i bit my tongue, as i didn't wan't to spoil the lads day.

You can water down keg lager. You just need to release the pressure by pushing down on the top of the barrell before threading out the spear. If you didn't do that you would risk killing yourself. It would make make the beer flat but so would the water. Once the water is added you just screw the spear back in.

Dont use the place myself but would just like to clear up a point
about the owner.
He's a Blue and he was in Poznam when we played Groclin (however you spell it) and he's a decent lad.

It's alright before a game but if you stay too long after a game you will find that the buses dry up and you can't get a taxi out of there and you are in a red stronghold.

A mate of mine got jumped by 3 rags about 5 years ago now so we never go back for more - better to head into town after the games.

The only rags i've seen are the twats who live in the flats and they all got twatted the last time the Manure were in town

-- Wed Mar 16, 2011 1:21 pm --

Eastlands Bar or Townley

Think I've seen her, but to be honest, I'm too busy getting leathered and buzzing with the lads to care.

-- Wed Mar 16, 2011 1:30 pm --

None of that in the Townley mate.
Many times we meet up with lads from all over the world, being australia, finland, bosnia, ireland, and loads of obscure places, and they're made to feel nothing but welcome.
Its the best City pub out of all of them, and I've tried all round COMS.

Just an update, the owner of Mary Dee`s owns a bar in Failsworth called Keoghs. This is the pub the Untied supporters club use before games, the one Oscar runs. Am reliably informed that he is a red, sat facing a lad who used to help run that supporters club and he is certain Keogh is a red.

I always go in pre match, as the DJ plays the music I'm into, and it's a good atmosphere. I'm not struck on the beer, but the rest makes up for it. City have tried to answer back with City Square but the open air setting isn't too comfortable. I just wish the atmosphere could transfer across the road to the stadium. Some games eg 06/07 it was the only reason to go the match. I've been in the Townley a few times but just got into the habit of going Mary D's. If there was a pub within reasonable distance that sold a good pint of real ale, I'd go there.
