Mass grave in Oldham, over 300 bodies found

Grim.

Also a timely reminder that whilst Britain today is fucked, it's likely always been fucked.

Had no idea this was even a thing before the 80s.

They're discovered fairly frequently aren't they, especially in very old population centres where stuff has been built on top of older stuff.

Remember about 10 years back when they were doing some work on the Metrolink in Manchester City centre and discovered a load of unmarked graves right beneath, I think Cross Street?

From a social history perspective it's fascinating what's hidden under our feet, but obviously on a human level it's very sad that there's so many people who don't know where their ancestors and loved ones are buried.
I remember the Cross Street discovery. if memory serves, they found that there once was a chapel there and a graveyard next door. Think they were moved to Southern Cemetery in the end.

This grave will be from Oldham Hospital. Until around 1980, hospitals took stillborns and miscarriages away from the mothers quickly and they generally went in municipal, unmarked graves.
