How does someone ' literally ' grab a hamstring ??

So, you've watched football all these years and you've never heard the expression 'grabbed his hamstring'?

While he is not 'literally' reaching into his thigh and physically touching the hamstring, it's a very well accepted way of describing a player reaching down the back of his thigh, and grabbing at the flesh.
