An amazing half all things considered. Kovacic, Haaland, Foden, Savinho, all dangerous going forward. The shape of the team looks better as well with Lewis and Gundogan staying deep to compensate for Kovacic's tendency to drift out of position while looking forward. He's more creative than we give him credit for.
But 9 shots (5 on target) yielding just 1 goal is part of our problem at the moment. Savinho needed to bury his chance and break his duck, Haaland really needs to bury that second chance that hit the post. Those little moments make the difference in games where we can't be at our best defensively.
Because as much as we were good for the majority of the half, Brighton just kept getting little sniffs of chances and we can't keep letting them create if we want to come out of this game feeling good. Sooner or later, the crowd will sense the shift in momentum and one of their chances will go in. We need to put our foot on it.
Our biggest strength over the eight years we've had under Guardiola has been our ability to basically starve teams to death, but this season - likely down to Rodri's absence and a few other things - we haven't been able to do that yet. Pep's got to find another way to do it now Rodri's injured, and games like Sporting explain why.
We dominated the first 35 mins against Sporting. We were spraying it around, running all over the pitch, creating big chances. But Sporting got that equaliser out of nowhere and they suddenly got a bit more confidence. The game got away from us in the space of 90 seconds because our lead stayed so slender and Sporting got a sniff.
In my opinion, our three peaks as a team under Guardiola were the 20-21 season between December and March (15 wins on the trot), the 21-22 season between November and January (12 wins on the trot), and the 22-23 season between February and May (17 games unbeaten) - when we starved teams to death the most effectively.
The game, for me, that sums our peaks up the best was that 4-0 win away at Newcastle in December 2021. We scored early through Dias, Cancelo smacked one in for 2-0, then Mahrez and Sterling made it 3-0 and 4-0. Newcastle had one shot on target and 28% of the ball. Pep needs to find a way to get us to even 80% of that side's quality.
I'm expecting Brighton to come back and win this because they're a good side and we're knackered and depleted. We literally have two 19-year-olds protecting the middle of the pitch. It's up to the forwards to know what state our defence is in and bury their big chances when they come. We need to be able to play while relaxed - it helps everyone.
