Yes. They are supposed to check all goals, though some may require little checking, all potential red cards and all potential penalties. They can also check mistaken identity if the wrong player is carded.
At least that how it was explained a few years ago.

I know what VAR claim, but there are some decisions that leave me baffled.

There's been quite a few posts on here that have suffered with that equaliser. Standard BM match thread fayre.

Come on FFS. We've been shite for much of the half and a single goal doesn't change that however great a strike it was. This thread is about the match in front of us and the players aren't looking too good even though many of them have helped us win four of the last five titles.

Right we were terrible. But the first pen for hand ball has to be given hasn’t it? Never seen clear and obvious used for handball decisions for pens before. Also if they give a free kick survey they know it’s an offence therefore the Var showing it was in the box should give the pen. Secondly, the one on Laporte is a pen and also the one on Kev, he moves his knee into him fouling Kev - they gave the free kick to Brentford leading to their goal for the exact same thing but in reverse. Basically I have no idea HOW THE HELL VAR IS ISED
