Gundogan feared Manchester City move would be off because of basketball injury
Phone call from Pep Guardiola reassured the new Man City star that he was still wanted
Gundogan was still on crutches as he went house-hunting in Manchester last month
Ilkay Gundogan was worried that his dislocated kneecap might have derailed his move to
Manchester City.
But his mind was set at rest by a phone call from new manager
Pep Guardiola, who asked for details of how he picked up the injury after it was revealed he had been playing basketball at the time.
The truth is that the basketball exercise was part of the warm-up for training with Borussia Dortmund, rather than a case of the 25-year-old taking unnecessary risks.
But the Germany international was worried it might kibosh the
£19.7million move.
“I was really curious about the reaction of not just Pep, but of the club as well,” said Gundogan. “What do they think now? Did anything change? Maybe they didn't want to buy me anymore?
“But first we spoke on the phone, Pep called me, he asked me what happened. I told him, explained exactly what happened, I asked him if that changed anything and he said 'No, definitely not,
I'm sure you will be fit and ready in a few weeks, few months and for me it's changing nothing.
“'You need to see what the doctors say but we still want you'. That was the last sign I needed to say 'OK that's the right thing, and now definitely what I wanted to do'.”
Gundogan is hoping to be back in training next month and could even be in line for his debut in the Manchester derby on September 10.
And he believes that after surgery to repair the knee, and an operation on a back problem which kept him out for a year, mean his injury woes are behind him.
