But Sterling wasn't challenging for the ball, he was just marking the player. So why would he be looking at the ball?

There was no touch on Shawcross when he jumped for the ball.

If you're going to penalise a player for getting close to his marker and not looking at the ball then it's the end of man marking.
He was making a run and Sterling put two hands on him and impeded him. That is a penalty nowadays.
 
Looked good first half, but let's not pretend it's been anything except pretty shit in the second.
