Why would the referee deserve a kicking for following the rules of the game?

They are supposed to wait until the play has stopped to blow for offside for exactly this reason.

The fault is with WB players who stopped when the flag was raised..

because he's not supposed to, it's her fault and she shouldn't have put her flag up. She got it wrong. Kavanagh was spot on but it should never have come to that.
