MANCHESTER CITY have stepped up their pursuit of whizkid Mateo Kovacic, dubbed the 'Croatian Lionel Messi'.
City chiefs held a meeting yesterday with Kovacic's representative with a view to signing the Dinamo Zagreb midfielder.

Kovacic, 17, is one of the hottest prospects in world football and has been linked to Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United.

The rising star broke into the Dinamo first team in 2010 and already has two caps for the Croatia Under-21s.

Yep but looking to the future whilst the academy builds up this is the best way.
The lads going to Eridivisie especially are getting top top experience.

When they start coming back, which may be as soon as January due to our killer fixture list they will be ready, settling in time will be minimal.

Dunno this lad, thanks for the nudge op.

And Im the Stockport Roberta Flack 'cos I sing 'killing me softly' well in the shower!

- 'croation Lionel Messi' .....................how many clones are there out there?!

Where this can work for us is in a few years time. Say he doesn't turn out to be excellent but just a decent PL standard forward. Assuming we pay £1m and get £5m for him that's an easy profit to add to the books especially as we can write off any academy costs for him.

We could never afford this sort of speculation in the past but now if we can bring through 1 in 20 to the first team saving us £25m+ along with a few being sold on for regular £3m to £5m fees it will be a nice little cash bonus. Even if we only get £500k to £1m it will pay for their costs at the academy as long as they don't cost big money to bring in and most 17 yr olds aren't going to cost big money.

Plus, the players themselves get the experience of being coached at a top academy which has to give them a leg up for their future careers - win-win all round (unless they end up getting their contract cancelled and disappear into obscrurity.

If he is the Croatian Lionel Messi. He must be pretty versatile.

Can he play many positions? Like striker, attacking midfield, winger etc....because this guy could be the 4th choice "striker".

Learn playing and training alongside the likes of Aguero, Silva, Nasri Dzeko etc.....while getting chances in cup games and sub appearances from the bench. And become regular when he is more mature. Similiar to the "Ox" at Arsenal.

This fits in with Tolmie's description of City targeting the best young talent. Any other paper than the sun reporting this?

I remember Arsenal being linked with this guy in the past. And there were sums of like 10m+ being branded around.

Just wondering if there is a way round FFP with players being "signed" for the Academy with a separate budget from the first team?? Would be really good if so...

They wanted 10 million for him from Arsenal, which Arsenal refused. I only seen videos of this guy, and he looks very talented. But thats videos
