Suppose in the summer we sign a new left winger of top class and Petrov becomes our squad player?

I'm not sure signing players purely to be a squad player is the right thing to do. We should be signing players better than what we already have with those we do have becoming squad players.

That said if he were to come cheaply and agreed that he would be happy to be back up then we have little to lose. I think we should be aiming higher though.
Could you imagine if we buy say robben, as an example, we are winning 1-0 against blackburn and they're now starting to get heavy on or players and piling a lot of pressure on. Would you then like to bring on petrov who probably puts less of a tackle in than robinho (not having a dig at any of them) or would you like to bring on matthew taylor who will fight for the ball all the time and still deliver a good cross in?
You could use this to a lot of players. We need to get our superstars yes, the ones who can score and create goals with their eyes shut , but we also need some battlers in their place who we can bring on, to ensure we ge the ball at every oppurtunity.

Ribery can do both

That is a valid point but then surely there must be a top class battler out there. The top clubs have players like that (Eboue, Kuyt, Park). I have nothing against Taylor and he would be a useful player but when we're already playing 3 defensive midfielders in away matches how much more defensive do you want us to get?

I think we should be aiming for someone of similar style but higher quality. Don't ask me who because I'm no scout.

I completely agree with you. We should be aiming to get players that can do both and we don't want to be defensive alll the time, all I'm saying is that we need a full squad of payers that vary from very creative players to less creative battlers. We want a big strong squad, I think we can all agree, but are we going to sign someone like eboue, kuy, ribery or park who want to just help us out here and there?

I'll say it again. Frank Ribery

the question seems to be getting more obscure by the minute, but i think the answer is that we actually need a centre half who can fill in as a stopper at left back (chiellini, lescott) and then play bridge left midfield.

No that is obscuring the question as they are clearly better Left mid-fielders than bridge, you are creating an entirely different arguement
