My son has just moved to a new flat and he's trying to set up my late father's computer for him to use.

Problem is it's got McAfee on it and on starting up we get the black screen and it will only open it in default safe mode (keyboard/mouse not live at this stage to change the option). When it does load in it comes up with the security screen for the administrator and wants a password. We've tried variations of what it could be from the clue given but with no joy.

We can't get into the computer to delete McAfee until the administrator is logged in and are therefore in a vicious circle.

Any advice to get round this?

Does your computer once turned on only go into this "safe mode" There is no other option at all.

I know you have said that is does but what I am trying to get at is does it boot windows ok and the only options you have when you open McAfee is the safe mode. Or does your computer do nothing other than straight into McAfee safe mode the moment it turns on?

It goes into safe mode then boots up windows but then comes up with the admin/password screen for McAfee.

We can get into the documents and programs on the PC but not onto the web and it won't allow us to delete the McAfee program without first entering the password.

Do you have or can you find the emergency disk?

do you know the email addy used?

Can you open the task manager? (ctrl+alt+del)

If so, click on show processes from all users and then manually shut down all mcafee processes. (Warning, this will then leave your computer unprotected so dont just use it as normal like this!)

Go into control panel and uninstall it, then download the "mcafee removal tool" to remove all traces and finally download Microsoft Security Essentials from microsoft.com which works fine and is free.
Also download CCleaner and tidy up your registry (this is optional btw).

google usb thief, i can get it for you if asked to pay. sounds like a malware bug tbh, look up combofix, usually on my bleeping computor (nowhere else)
follow the instructions to the letter, it can have very bad repocussions (yes i didnt follow my own advice).

i could be totally wrong but never heard of AV protection having a password
