MCFC U-18's

You make a good point that Chelsea seem to make more Premier League loans than we do which must help in making the player first team ready.Interestingly the guy that has previously arranged these loans for Chelsea resigned in the last couple of days. The only loan I can think of recently was Jason to Sunderland which was hardly a roaring success.

I don't mind loans not being a success - at least we learn something about the player.

But Denayer adds to the evidence that players are more likely to get decent standard loans after a bit of first team football somewhere else. For example, I think we'd be able to find a PL loan for Roberts if he wanted one.

I just think that's easier with a few minutes here and there at City rather than a season not learning much somewhere else.

Tommy Doyle captained England U17 last night vs Germany. I think he'll be playing EDS football by the end of the season.

He's still only an u16 too! He's not set the world alight for the u18s yet but that's totally understandable as he's clearly much younger and feeling his way into things. It'll come as he's some talent.

Where in midfield is he playing? No chance of anyone coming through as an 8 or 10 in the next 3/4 years so I hope he's versatile enough to play fernandinho's role at the base of midfield where spaces might open up over the next few years.

As en eight...Bear in mind he literally turned 16 a few weeks ago. He's incredibly young so time is most definitely on his side. Sure he could play anywhere in the mid 3 though given his skill-set.

Time is on his side, I'm just not sure if it's on ours. His contract will end at 17 so we've got 2 years to convince him and players like him that there's a pathway into our midfield so they don't follow the likes of Campbell, Sancho, Duncan. I know he's as city as they come, but 2 more years of the status quo would be enough to make anyone look elsewhere - particularly if Brahim, Foden and co. don't get anywhere.

We will offer him a contract if he keeps it up also he has a affinity with our club

No shit we'll offer him a contract, and no shit he's got an affinity to the club, we all know whose grandson he is.

That won't be enough if we don't start practicing what Khaldoon preaches in every end of season interview and actually bring people through.

The affinity only works if he thinks he's got actually got a chance of playing for his childhood club.

He's still a child, he doesn't need to be promised a first team place ffs. Who knows whether Silva, Gundogan etc will still be around by the time he's demanding regular first team playing tube, IF he continues to develop.

No one said anything about getting promised a first team place, as you well know.

Well, define "bring people through", because of it doesn't mean fairly regular playing time in the first team in not sure what the point, or the attraction, is.

This type of exchange of views just highlights what the problem is.

Tommy Doyle, who hasn't yet made a mark at EDS level, will find himself in the same boat as a number of other young City players if his progress gathers pace.
Not yet ready for the first team but treading water in meaningless EDS games. They need the exposure to open age pro football but find no way of getting it, there's no access to it, unless they leave or get released or loaned. Not many will ever find their way into the first team squad. However, they all deserve a chance to test themselves in open age football to see how good they really are. They will never know that if they stay at EDS level and that's the real problem. Some of these lads miss the chance to find out how good they are at the right time. A player like Foden needs to get on the pitch at the top level soon so he can see where he's really at, not so we can see.

Wonderful post and so well put. Thank you. :)

Tommy Doyle is about 12!!!! Let's try and keep things in perspective. Yes we all know giving young lads a chance is important especially with the growing impatience to " make it" and the pressure added by the media but it's getting silly when someone like Doyle is highlighted.

Treading water in meaningless EDS games! Such an inflammatory thing to say when he hasnt even played an EDS game yet ( as far as I know) and has only played a few 18's games. Give the lad a chance and let him grow up or should he be playing first team football already instead of say Fenandinho?

And yes I know he isn't 12!

Just wanted to bring up a side point that academies are producing more and more players of a higher quality than ever before. I think this problem of getting your youth players to the first team will become more and more difficult, if every year you see atleast 1 phenomenal talent pop up in your academy, you can't sustain that because your squad can only have so many players and you'd assume they'll play for your team for atleast 5+ years.

Since the amount of clubs will stay the same you will see an influx of talent that need to go to non-elite clubs, the only option is to replace the crappier players at these non-elite clubs to bolster the quality overall. Even Monaco will have problems with all the young talent they get in, their option was to just sell alot of their best players, but elite clubs obviously do not want to do that.

There may be a solution for these elite clubs (I don't know what it is), I don't think it's right that young players just go to a City, or Chelsea to take advantage of the amazing faculties then leave when they are 16 or 17, but at the same time there will be no space because you have soo much talent. We have to pick and choose, bring in Foden and Diaz to start.

/end rant

Both his grandfathers played for City (Mike Doyle & Glyn Pardoe) and he's distantly related to Alan Oaks as well (Glyn Pardoe's cousin). The kid has blue blood in his viens and will try to make it with us first.

Well when Lingard made his breakthrough at 23, it probably gives them a reason to stay.
