Usual scouse propaganda, pandering to the dribbling masses of Merseyside, Chester and Oslo.

Absolute bollocks van Dijk gets anywhere near the Balon D'Or. How can a player, a defender no less, who won ONE trophy be considered over anyone from a team scoring over 150 goals and winning ALL THREE of their domestic trophies?

If van Dijk played for us, these fucking chimps in the media would be giving it to Ronaldo again
As others have said, bang on the money with the last sentence..

If Bernardo Silva isn't considered for this recognition it will be an injustice. Last season he combined high technical capability with prodigious work rate and an exemplary commitment to the team ethic that Pep has created amongst the squad. I've seen some amazing players perform in our team these past 60 years but never seen anyone make such a telling contribution in all areas of the pitch like Bernardo did last year. Even at the death of the game with us 4-1 up against Brighton and the title won, he still had the energy and commitment to block a Brighton counter by turning up at left-back and snuffing the move out.

I don't want to put a hex on him but if Bernardo continues at the rate of progress he's shown over the past year and he stays injury free in his career with us, he could well surpass David Silva and Yaya Toure as the greatest City player I've ever seen.. and it was some leap for me eventually to accept those two ahead of Colin Bell!

I like Van Dijk as a player and think he has great qualities but (as others have said here) he benefits week in week out from The Anfield Road Formation Brick Throwers posting two (and on occasion three) holding midfielders in front of their back four. Swap Laporte and Van Dijk and guess who would be in the running for the Balon d'Or?

If having won the domestic treble in the toughest League in the world whilst achieving such incredibly high levels of personal performance, as well as subsequently winning team and personal honours with his national team at a major tournament, it doesn't end with Bernardo getting any recognition from the press and his fellow professionals, then 'injustice' won't be a strong enough word for it.. but knowing the media and how those who manipulate it work, Bernardo's glorious season will quickly disappear from their collective memory, like 101 points, the domestic treble and so on and so on..

Agree completely.

I was just highlighting that Ogden really has just become a well-credentialed troll, as is the case for a fair few other football “journalists”.

This is the beebs take on it

"The victory was achieved through Guedes, the Valencia winger smashing in from the edge of the area following Bernardo Silva's clever cutback, though Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen will be disappointed he did not keep the effort out.

The game was billed on the clash of the two influential captains - Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Netherlands centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

Both players claimed silverware at club level last season, Ronaldo winning the Serie A title with Juventus, while Van Dijk contributed to ending Liverpool's seven year wait for a trophy by triumphing in the Champions League.

Ronaldo, 34, scored a sublime hat-trick in the semi-final victory over Switzerland but was unable to add to his 88 international goals, seeing a thumping, goalbound drive blocked by the towering Van Dijk.

The closest he came to netting was when he skipped past two defenders from the left, but stuck a shot straight at Barcelona's Cillessen. He also smashed a free-kick wide late on.

Former Southampton and Celtic player Van Dijk was his solid, assured self at the back but could do nothing about the winning goal, though Cillessen was unable to keep out Guedes' strike having got a hand on the effort.

Manchester City's Silva, who set up the goal, said: "I am very happy and very proud. It is my first title with Portugal. After the amazing season with my club, to finish this way is amazing. It is time to rest now and prepare for next season and try to do even better."

That is how well they thought Bernardo played, two mentions and one description of "clever" but Ronaldo and Van Dick both claimed silverware last year and Van Dick was towering, solid, assured.

Fucking desperate ****s.
VVD doesn’t even get in to WhoScored’s Nations League Finals Team.

Bernardo is the second highest rated. Though, even taking off the blue-tinted glasses, he really should be the highest, as he basically carried Ronaldo (and Portugal) through.

It’s also interesting that a **** player like Delph makes it in. ;-)

Wow. Who was on their panel? just Garth Crooks? No Liverpool players on that, so I'm sure it will go down well over on Merseyside.

It is based entirely on their running player ratings for the Nations League games, which are supposedly “based on a unique, comprehensive statistical algorithm, calculated live during the game”, from “over 200 raw statistics included in the calculation of a player’s/team’s rating, weighted according to their influence within the game”, with “every event of importance taken into account, with a positive or negative effect on ratings weighted in relation to its area on the pitch and its outcome.” (Source)

Even if you question how their algorithm interprets the metrics at times, their rating system it is still substantially better than football “analyst” ratings (especially given the Liverpool-bias inherent in most, as you pointed out).

it does say "Finals", so any previous matches are irrelevant to this award presumably. Ronaldo got 3 in the semifinal which is pretty much guaranteed to give him a high rating.
It's four matches, two of which involved mighty Switzerland who the Dutch didn't have the benefit of boosting stats against - that'll add to why Delph is in.
