I'm not entirely sure I agree with the premise behind the concept of sportwashing. Far from disguising issues like human rights, it shines a light on them in a way that would never happen without that involvement in sport.

The idea that the UAE would be under the same level of scrutiny without the ownership of City seems to me completely misplaced.

A good point

I’m amazed at the blitheness on here mate. The decision to give Matthew Hedges a life sentence yesterday is a PR disaster, and we (City) are going to cop for some serious shit because of it. Quite honestly, if another club were owned by Sheikh Mansour and not us, I’d probably be sticking the boot in too

Why is it a PR disaster ? Have you ever thought that he could be guilty ? Just because his wife says he is innocent doesn't mean he is. My wife thinks I am a right dick but it doesn't mean, oh hand on that is poor example.
It just be that he was recruited by MI6, got caught and is now banged up.

It’s becoming that bad it’ll be common knowledge that we get blamed for everything.

A Liverpool fan at work even says he can tell the media try and blame City for everything.

Bring on the negativity I say, it’ll reach a stage it’ll have the reverse affect.

Could be yes. Matter of opinion though isn’t it? And guilty or innocent, the trial appears to have made this one look impartial

“Get this over in 5 minutes and we can have a spot of lunch.......”

Ok so his trial lasted 5 minutes which seems a tad quick. Mind you it lasted a damn sight longer than Abdel Hakim Belhaj's trial. Ok his rendition from India to Libya lasted several hours so I think that made up for it, oh and the fact that he was then illegally held in soliatry confinement whilst they tortured him kind of makes what the UAE are doing look like a tea party. You see thats the difference, In the UK when we know we can find someone guilty we have a trial that lasts several days, when we think they will be found not guilty we dont bother having one, we just kidnap them.

They complain that when City are playing, its really the UAE and football is being used a promotion of a nation state. And yet we're just coming off a week when the national sides have been playing and strangely not one word about sports-washing.

Just been through the Saturday papers, now that Football Leaks are focusing on other clubs, they have grown cold on the issue. How convenient.

Yes it’s a completely new thing country’s using sport as a way of improving relations, just a coincidence that the Olympics have been held in Nazi Germany, communist Moscow & China & numerous times in USA.

With Abu Dhabi’s ownership of us, their internal problems are magnified in a way they wouldn’t be if they had no involvement in football. We’re City fans, not Abu Dhabi fans, but this is the sort of stuff we’re going to have to get used to but so are our owners. I’ve said before that they draw a line between media criticism of City and that of their country but the last few weeks have crossed that line. Be interesting to see how this goes.
This is just the ''new' journalistic angle of attack.

It needed to be heightened due to some of the revelations about £4m transactions for matches that never took place and the like.

Any word about the FA (dirty oil money) Emirates Cup? Or the Arsenal (dirty oil money) Emirates stadium and shirt deal? Expert that to be all over the weekend papers.

Don't forget the rags raking in millions a year from First National Bank of Dubai. Following the Hedges case and the Panorama documentary on the Novichok killers last night I'm sure the rags will be falling over themselves to cancel their Aeroflot sponsorship as well as their FNB sponsorship....

Makes me laugh how Human Rights has become an issue for football fans. I have had genuine conversations with fans about the results etc and they bring up human rights, wtf!

The new football fan, gone are the days when they just kicked fcuk out of each other.

The outrage is linked to the amount of cash these deals bring into said clubs, therefore we can only be about £4 million pounds worth of disgusted, you just know that is what the next argument will be!

Engage them, ask them what they suggest should be done, you'll normally get a response like 'well for starters they should be banned from owning a football club', then ask them what that would solve, watch them become lost for words. Faux outrage for point scoring purposes, reprehensible.
