The BBC should know better, they're not trying to get advertising clicks either so have no excuse for such blatant bias. I assume the shit they continue to peddle is because most journalists grew up in the era of rag dominance so followed them like glory hunting sheep, and are now desperately trying to keep them relevant.

The Guardian is actually worse, its article today about Pep's ribbon and about Abu Dhabi human rights could have been written by a bitter rag, Cockney or Scouser on a fans forum. Ridiculous bias and unfounded criticism. Whoever wrote it will be in tears when we lift the Premier League title.

Can’t agree. It’s an uncomfortable truth. Not one that I personally feel sufficiently worked up about it to demand our owners jack it all in, but a widely recognised truth (if you accept Amnesty reports at face value) nonetheless. Applying Western standards and values to countries with no real history of democracy and where many governments are little more than fascist theocracies, is always an iffy game, but I’d be interested to know which part of Conn’s article you thought was ridiculously biased and unfounded

I thought the guardian article was entirely fair comment .

This is a point I’ve been making.

The UAE is less than 50 years old as a sovereign state. It’s more or less based on a system of feudal monarchy and its culture and norms are those of an Arab & Muslim background. It took us over 700 years to get from Magna Carta to a parliament elected via a system of universal suffrage and a Bill of Rights in the late 17th century. Our attempts to unseat so-called strong-men like Saddam and Gaddafi and impose our own system of beliefs have been unremitting failures that have led to death and misery for millions. Meanwhile, Emiratis live in a stable and secure environment, under a government that looks after them very well, albeit one that doesn’t like dissent.

Whilst the UK is far from perfect the media is usually allowed to publish its views not only on other countries but also on the UK.

Just find it slightly amusing that they come up with all these human rights issues now when it has been going on for more years than I can remember. Was in Oman in the mid eighties when British firms were making a killing building the new Oman and not one word about the condition of the working Asian population or HR violations. Not saying they shouldn’t bring them up but it is a convenient stick to beat the dog when they haven’t given a sh1t in the past.

If you’re outside UK, BBC website has advertising. I think they’ve become much more click baity in recent times.

Yes, I thought the article was fair. We have to acknowledge that standards in our owners country are not the same as here.
There is, however, a lot of nonsense written about it by ignorant people and trollers, especially in the Grauniad.
The middle East is a constant battle between conservative, reform and religious groups and does not make governance easy. Does anybody know if Sheik Mansour is a reformer?
We should also not forget that the UK has much to answer for on the human rights front by taking part in an illegal invasion of Iraq and all the fall out from that episode.

A lot less people are executed in Abu Dhabi compared to our friends in the USA and China. We have been killing people in the middle east with drones for about ten years. Many of them are well away from combat zones and they never get a trial. The stench of hypocrisy from the bleeding heart liberals makes me sick.
