It is one of the most fascinating questions of the age whether Pep Guardiola's methods would work with inferior players. I have thought long and hard about it and discussed it ad infinitum with my sons and all my City supporting friends, as well as some neurotic rags I know. We discussed wet Wednesdays in Stoke, windy week ends in Wigan and even the trophy winning gene in some club's DNA. We even considered how much more "it" means to some supporters before I found I had to walk hesitantly and alone to my verdict. My mature and long considered view is that I really don't give a damn. I am proud to say that Pep is at our club because our owners and board had no intention of ever asking him to work with inferior players, in fact we wanted him to avoid inferior players like the plague. The club were prepared to provide Pep with the resources to build teams the like of which English football had never seen before and Pep had proved already that there was no other manager who could unearth young talent and develop it quite like he could. At times he's like a magician or an alchemist turning base metal into gold - give him a player you dismiss as inferior and he'll show you you don't know what you're talking about. All the time there was brilliance struggling to get a out and Pep had the key all the time. Then there are the excellent players ... who "transition" to club legends and greatness. And then there's Phil Foden ... for whom the sky's the limit.
Pep constantly puts his success at the feet of his players. I expect there is a huge chunk of humility in that answer though. It is without question that players have to have certain technical and physical qualities as a standard so Pep would say himself if he doesn't have the players he won't win. Even if he coaches a player to greatness he would still credit that player before himself. He can't extract from a player what isn't in him or what a player isn't willing to give.

Pep doesn’t use inferior players, he uses better players & expects bravery in situations that we were told was suicidal. Get rid, hoof, don’t pass across your goal, stay on your line, put em in row z........

the magic comes from knowing what to do with such ability, when was the last time a player at City was described as a luxury player ?

Pep's methods are complex and require players with great football intelligence to make the most of them. An Oxbridge professor isn't a failure if they can't teach their subject to an inner city primary school class, where English isn't the first language for a lot of the pupils. Or to a class of disinterested 15 year olds in a bog standard comprehensive. They are where they are because they're the best in their field and, for that reason, they attract the best students.

What a great analogy , now if only you could spread the word to the great unwashed. Why do you think educated scribblers in the sports media world are unable to grasp such a simple comparison, it couldn’t be anything to do with unprofessional tribalism blinding them could it?
