Messi - a serious question?

He is a fantastic talent and would love him here but its a dream we all dream about to be honest the only way he would come to us is if we were their or their about for the next 4-5 seasons winning the prem and challenging for the champ lge regular (last 4)to be honest aswell dont think theirs enough money in the world for barca to sell him

Think Ribery would be a more realistic target!
I think so too... im wasn't saying with my post that i don't think Messi would want to come to us or not... i'm just saying i think he and we are a few years away from it... I think Ribery is more realistic and very much an exciting player... along with Dzeko and Plajnic... wow... that would really be fantastic... I would want us to find the next big thing... the next generation of great players... the ones that hasnt yet proved themselves but are on the brink of doing it... Hamsik is in the same bracket... as is quite a few others... I do hope we are continuing to build for the future... and in that future I would truly love to see Messi at one point or another play for us!!

Messi is without doubt a phenomenal player, the best now and may be he will be the best ever.

However I don't want him at City.

Some people on here seem obsessed with being the biggest club in the world. That matters not a jot to me. We have ridiculed United fans for going on about being the biggest, bestest etc.

I just want us to be hugely successful, lots of Leagues and Cups. I don't care if our gates are bigger than United's, Newcastle's or anyone elses. Let's buy half a dozen real quality young players rather than blow the lot on one player.

Messi would certainly make us more marketable and probably more successful on the pitch.

However I think we should find our own heroes rather than nicking other peoples. If we won everything in sight people would say well what do you expect they paid 300 million for Messi.

As far as I know United with all their success have never fielded a player acknowledged around the world as the best. Ditto Liverpool. These players have historically played for Madrid and Barca. Quite happy for it to remain that way. It will make it all the sweeter when we beat them with Ronaldo and Messi in their sides.

Maybe we are building a bigger stadium to house all the extra fans paying to come and watch Messi :O)

Can't see it happening in the short term but possibly when he's a few years older. I think Barca would go nuts with us even if we started negotations.

If Barca did want to sell him then there would be power wanking going on till the next millenium.

there aint a chance barca will let messi go. even if the contract claus is met.
he strikes me as the kind of player that dosnt really care too much about the money, he wouldnt be phased by us waving 3 times his current monthly wage at him.
he loves barca and barca love (and need) him.
we will just have to find other players. messi is a no-go for the foreseeable future.

The legend speaketh and I agree.....

Could we afford him? Yes.

Would our owners want to spend that kind of money? No.

It would cost us a fortune and could not conceivably be worth it. Messi is the kind of play you buy when you have won the Champions League 3 times already and are trying for a fourth.

He'd be wasted on us in my view and it would be a waste of money. It's too early in our development to start trying to put players like that in the side.

Ronaldo?

People suggesting Ribery is more attainable, are incorrect. Firstly, he is more of a risk than Torres at present in terms of fitness.

And he is already on record saying his wife wants him to play in a warm country - he wants to play for Barca or Real - the reason he is leaving Bayern.

I do agree that £200m or so could buy us that next level of player below Messi (pretty much everyone else). For that, you go out and get Fabregas, Torres Kaka and Maicon.

Fabregas is such an attainable option in only that he plays for a selling club who would not baulk at £60m.

He is a Barca man, but still has time on his side, waiting for the likes of Xavi and Iniesta to make way.

And Michael Johnson will be ready for next season.

I wouldn't stake the wifes wages on him lasting long though!

It is not a case of City not being good enough for Messi, no other club is good enough for the 'little genius.' You need to understand two things, firstly, where he has come from (I posted a documentary on the "Let's buy Messi" thread which details his origins and how difficult it was for him to continue playing football). Secondly, you need to try and grasp what it means to be from Catalunya (I think most people will agree that Messi is an honourary Catalan). Barca is a symbol of their identity and of their struggle for self-determination, these feelings transgress football, for a Catalan Barcelona defines who they are.

In his current form Messi will NOT be allowed to be sold, and he has already established that he wants to stay at Barca for life. Some people have said, that he may get bored and want a new challenge, unlikely (did Pele get bored at Santos, Raul at Madrid, Totti at Roma?), but still possible. However, if that happens I can only see him going back to Argentina (he has said that the only League he follows closely is the Argentinian League), and despite being at Barca from the age of 13 he still has a deep love for Argentina (hit boots are emblazened with the flag of Argentina). He may also wish to recapture the love of his home fans, who still (rather ungratefully) refer to him as "the Catalan" (although winning the World Cup may go someway towards appeasing them).

If, like Ronaldinho he loses his love for the game (for the sake of football I hope this never happens), and starts to lose his form, then of course there is a possibility that he may seek pastures new (my guess would be Argentina over England). I know that Sheikh Mansour keeps in very close contact with the Barcelona hierarchy and be rest assured, that if even the slightest glimmer of hope emerges that he may wish to move on, an offer comparable to the GDP of a small country will arrive at the Barca President's doorstop.

For now, forget about it. Let us just revel in watching the captivating magician at work and appreciate the scintillating performances of arguably the greatest player of his generation.

No chance - he's made his money, he's winning everything under the sun, and he's already at one of the most successful clubs in Europe.

I echo what many others are saying regarding this thread, and thats let's find our own Messi.

In fact I'd rather people be talking in the same vein about Tevez in a couple years, after he's won us a few titles and is taking the best teams in Europe apart.

Or even better, to find one of our own young lads whose come through the academy, being acoladed in the same terms as Messi.

Being realistic Tolmie, my opinion is that we haven't got a hope in hells chance of getting Messi within the next 5 years at least. He is coming into his prime and Barca cant replace the player he is going to become.

The only way City will get a player of Messi's standard is by buying potential and there is only 2 players on this planet that have the possibilty of getting anywhere near to that.

The first is 19 year old Eduardo Salvio
salvio.jpg

Originally with Lanus in Argentina, he signed for Atletico Madrid in the recent transfer window. He can play in Messi's role, on the wing or as an out and out striker. He has made 6 sub appearances so far for the Spanish club, and has shown glimpses of what he can do. I believe with the season AM are having hasn't helped his game time. Obviously playing a youngster is a bit of a gamble, and as Atletico try to get a Euro place they seem unwilling to take the risk. Definate 1 for the future though.

The other, and is my favourite out of the 2, Iker Muniain
Iker-Muniain-2.jpg

Iker is a 17 year old that plays with Bilbao in Spain. He has already been labelled as the "Spanish Messi" by the Spanish media. Muniain became recognised as Joaquin Caparros decided to allow him to train with the first team and he later made his debut at the age of 16 and 15 days.
Iker has made 21 appearances for Athletic Club this season, 18 of those coming from the subs bench, with 3 goals and 2 assits.
He has always been the stand out player in youth competitions and picked up best player of the tournament Ufarte Lopez in 2007, and was National Youth League top scorer with 8 goals in 8 appearances.
Muniain is considered a crucial part of the U17 side, and is their best player and his development just continues to impress across Spain.
Joseba Etxeberria has stated that he believes Muniain is one of the most exciting talents to come through los Leones' youth system for years.
"A footballer of this class integrates themselves very well - football only has one language, and Iker has mastered it," Etxeberria enthused to Radio Euskadi.
"It's very positive news, even aside from his goalscoring contribution to the team. Muniain will certainly be a quality player, not just for this team.
"If he continues along this path, I believe he will become a world class player."
"We hope he will spend many years here, but this will definitely be difficult"

Go get Iker Muniain now, put in a bid of around £25m and, in 2-3 years City will have there very own Lionel Messi.

Well that's it then! Plain as the nose on yer face! He's ours next season!

Aside from the well-documented his early years, injuries growing pains etc, the Catalan issue is less of an issue.

After all, both Fabregas and Pique came through at the same time, are from Catalunya, unlike Messi, yet had no compulsion leaving when they did.

Granted, one has returned, another may not be long off doing the same, but these are two examples against your argument.

Like you, believe it is a pipedream at present, but as you say, any encouragement...

Messi will not join us in the near future.

He will probably never join us. He owes too much to Barcalona.

You're right, we are just a reasonably sized club with a resonable history (like 15-20 other clubs in this country have) and have a small but well varied amount of success! That's it, nothing more and nothing less!

See the above post. You're getting obsessed with something which is of little relevance to players.

And you do us down too.

You're right, I suppose players don't care whether a club has won 2 or 7 league titles or 4 or 10 fa cups. But a clubs success does build a prestige that we are 25+(maybe many more)years off building. Barca have already got that and that is important to players like Messi! There is only one player like Messi every 10-15 years (Zidane, Maradona, Cruyff, Pele, Di Stefano) and right now City are not yet big enough or good enough for a player of this quality or stature (there may be only 1 or 2 other clubs in the world that are)! If Messi was to leave Barca he would need to go to the right club and at the right time, and the time now, this summer or next is not right for Messi to come to City! Di Stefano went from Barca to Real and stayed there(although forced!), Pele i dunno about, Cruyff went from Ajax to Barca, Maradonna went from Napoli to Barca, Zidane went from Juve to Real, would Messi go from Barca to City? Do you see the difference? City are not a Messi club yet, money or not!

And where i'm not exactly bigging City up, i'm not doing us down neither! I'm just being realistic, i'm not saying we're small or being a "lickle Cityer" in any way! We are a reasonably sized club with some history and a small but varied amount of success like 15-20 other clubs - and that's a good thing, not a bad thing! Within the next 3-5 years will be able to attract some top players, but i think we need to prove ourselves a little bit first!
