Messi vs Kinkladze

For a couple of years with us gio was one of the best players in the world with the ball at his feet. Whilst messi of course is a better all round player, gio had that ability to run at people and past them with the ball appearing to be stuck to his feet. It's a rare skill, you dont see these players very often. Maradona had it, Messi's got it and for a very short period a shit team with a shit manager and a shit chairman got lucky. Silva is the nearest thing we've got now: a playmaker who makes goals out of nothing. Bit silva can't go past people like gio did.

The problem for gio was injury. He got a knock or two in his last season with us and then another more serious one early in his career at Ajax I think. He also put weight on and he suddenly lost the burst of pace which took him past people. This rendered him a shadow of his former self as he'd lost his biggest asset.

But don't let the revisionists on this thread kid you: for a while he was absolutely mesmerising and the talk of football. I've never seen a better player at going past people as if they weren't there. At that part of the game at least, for two years, he was as good as messi is now.
Is this your new collective term for people you don't agree with DD? ;-)
no GDM. People who don't agree with me are numpties ;-)

I agree with everything you say about Kinkladze but you are missing the main difference between him & Messi: Messi cares & fights. Gio didn't & didn't.

Fantastic player and a fantastic servant to the football club aswell. Your correct we will never be able to see if a player like a Messi or even a Silva, Kompany, Balotelli, Tevez, Aguero etc could handle it in the npower championship as they would be out of the club in a shot and that is the reason I will always respect the man.

No you cannot compare the two but Kinkladze was a fantastic player in his own right and regardless of his time at Derby or Ajax during the 1996 season he was as good as any player in the league including the Bergkamps of this world.

Unfortunately for City and Kinkladze our paths crossed at the wrong time. Still an absolute legend and still my all time favourite City player.

You've never mentioned before you're a big Kinkladze fan.

Also Komapny would easilly handle it in the championship. Awful comment.

Utter shite. When we got relegated under Ball, Kinky was on a one man mission to keep us up. Remember the tears after the Liverpool game ?

That goal v Southampton was the best I've ever seen(live) and I'm been going over 40 years....Genius player and was a hero to my kids growing up!

As a neutral I loved kinkladze. Never better than Messi, not sure if the OP is serious. I think kinkladze had as much skill as Messi though, same with gazza, but for the rest of the game they're way behind

Gio was the best dribbler I have ever seen, but no team ever managed to harness his skill for the benefit of the team

We were relegated twice with him in the team.

There were some spectacular moments, but you forget how any games just totally passed him by

Similar players but Messi is the greatest player to ever play the game.

Kinkladze was underrated by many and was unlucky with injuries and wrong place at wrong time moments but no one comes close to Messi, not even my favourite ever player.

To be honest it's tough to compare the two, however:

Imagine Kinkladze in his prime in that current Barca team with players like Xavi and Iniesta constantly giving him the ball. Barca would rip most of La Liga a new one without Messi, the point being that Messi whilst undoubtedly world class does have it easier than Kinkladze ever did given the players he has around him. Messi can't do it for Argentina which says a lot to me.

Actually he started this calendar year.

I think a lot of people here have only City in their heads. Seem blind.

as i rememeber he only ever turned it on when we were on tv

Bollocks. City 6-0 Swindon wasn't on telly and he ran the show.

Eddie Mcgoldrick was on fire that game too IIRC.

Never seen Messi in the flesh so Gio gets my vote.

well there u go he turned on on against swindon got 2 be better than messi then

I'm not really one of Messi ass explorers but he actually has a goal per game in last 14-15 games for Argentina so it's not like that one can be used anymore.

Gio was my favourite player at the time & was playing with mainly talentless numpties in the midfield, he was also twice the player (in ability) that Silva is, however, he was a lazy twat who only turned it on when he was in the right mood & cared only for himself. He was also a greedy bastard who would only pass to a team mate if he thought he couldn't score himself (even if that involved beating two more players, he'd often back himself rather than a team mate with a tap in) or alternatively, he was fucked after a long run... Then he may pass (MAY).

Silva has twice the balls & professionalism that Gio had & if he had the same talent, he would be Messi mk 2. He doesn't. Gio was a one off worldbeater.

Gio was probably THE most pampered, selfish, player in the history of MCFC who helped a team good enough for the top league, get relegated twice.

I'm sure he loved City & the fans but he loved himself more than any club.

A few tears at relegation prove different ? My fucking arse.

A better comparison is with the humbler David Silva vs Kinky. I love the bones of Kinky and he provided me with more moments to admire than any other City player I've ever seen including the current crop. A genius for beating people better than one Christiano Ronaldo and an ability to control where the ball was ending up. If I had to watch one player play 30 mins to provide me with enjoyment it would be Kinky. But if I had to win a game to win a title or a cup, I'd have little David.

It has to be Kingkladze, and here is why. Kinky was a lazy fooker who did as little as possible in training but still delivered for us on the field. He loved us as much as we loved him and enjoyed his football. Messi may have won some silverware and scored some more goals but he doesn't even like football. It's well known that he has bugger all to do with his Barca teammates and you get the feeling he'd be happy enough anywhere doing what he is doing, working diligently and just making his living as a footballer.
Kinky returned the love, he didn't work hard to be a legend, he was born one.
