It was obvious Messi would win it once Argentina won the Copa America it was never even slightly in doubt as he won best player and joint top scorer, this award has always favoured international tournaments, in the distant past it was rubbish no non European was even eligible before the mid 90s when George Weah's win ended that.
This European football journalist award was never the prestigious award to win when I was growing up, every player wanted to win the FIFA world player of the year award as that was actual recognition but even some of their results were questionable, throughout history Ballon d'Or though has had many many questionable or very dubious winners if you dig deep enough and look, when English clubs were dominating Europe from the mid 70s to mid 80s only one British based player got on the podium that was Kenny Dalglish, even then he didn't win nobody else even came nearly close to winning it during that dominance, the reason given is they were great teams but not great individuals totally different to today's narrative and Kevin Keegan won twice while at Hamburg only English player during the dominant years, that was during a time when every single winner from 76 to 81 was a German league player load of bobbins this award always has been just super glorified these days. When they scrapped the award last year it was criminal and unfair on Lewandowsi he literally had no real completion for it, in my view if Messi or Cristiano would've been a shoe like Lewandowski last year then the award ceremony defo would've gone ahead or some kind of presentation.
It's a popularity contest that overlooks some winners in truth Cristiano for me deserved at least two maybe three tops, not being biased I actually think he deserved it while at the rags in his last season, pretty much two of his award wins came during inferior individual seasons to Messi when it's meant to be an individual award not based on what someone wins, wouldn't say Messi should've won all his either we've had these two get awards just for being who they're at times, personally lost interest in this award as a legitimate best player award when Michael Owen won in 2001 laughable that and it completely cemented my poor view of it. It was already poor after Beckham somehow finished runner up not a fucking chance he wasn't even the top rag at any point, Modric was even more laughable as a winner they give this award to highly regarded major trophy winners usually, or popular players like Owen who wasn't as deserving as people who didn't even make the podium, or in Modric's case some batshit crazy weird hipster shit where those voters need some sense smacked into them.
