I'm a big fan of the series, I even have the original NES game 'Metal Gear' that came out in 1984.

Seen the trailers fror MGS4 and it looks fecking awesome.

Can't wait.

Splinter Cell > Metal Gear Solid

MGS4 IS amazing! Lots of ways to play it as a stealth or a run in gun shooter. Sniper is quite useful to use, as well as many other cool gadgets!
Loads of replay ability, lots of easter-eggs. Over 60+ weapons and they are customizeable, most of them anyhow. Graphics are just amazing, and there are loads of CQC moves. Storyline line is rich detailed and thrilling although be abit long actually a 30m scene. Also very challenging if you play it on a high difficulty.
