Micah Richards' England Situation
Micah Richards, only 23 years of age and he is already a Manchester City stalwart and is first choice Right Back for England. At least that’s what I should be able to type, but unfortunately thanks to a certain 'coach' Micah has only been able to fulfil one part of that sentence.
For his club he has been in imperious form playing a major role in City’s hunt for success both domestically and abroad, as for his England career it has been a different story. Despite being the best Right Back in the country over the last two years, England manager Fabio Capello has not seen fit to even give the Leeds born defender a chance to show what he can do. And there is no comprehensible reason as to why that has been the case.
Micah would be the very first to admit that under Hughes’ management at City he took his eye off the ball a little. But under the tutelage of Roberto Mancini the defender has excelled in every aspect of his game. Just look at the Manchester derby not three weeks ago, he mercilessly crushed each and every attacking probe made by Ashley Young to pass him and then turned defence into attack setting up a superb assist for Sergio Aguero, one of four assists already this season (only one less than Ashley Young and equal to that of Milner, Agbonlahor and Lampard)
And once more as the England squad is announced I see Micah’s name missing from the list and I cannot imagine the disappointment he is current feeling, there is nothing more he can physically do. I reckon Micah could achieve 10 out of 10 for every performance from now until the next international break and he still wouldn’t be called up. No Capello sees fit to call up Liverpool ‘defender’ Glen Johnson, a player who has only managed three games all season due to injury. Fact is the England squad is no longer picked on form, and before I get the ‘Micah didn’t have his best day yesterday’ comments Zamora was rubbish for Fulham today yet he’s in the squad. I don’t know what Capello has against Richards but one thing is for sure England’s loss is certainly City’s gain.
