United and City warn players off Twitter

Mike Keegan

January 20, 2010

UNITED and City have told players not to use social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.

The Manchester clubs have advised stars against posting personal information on the internet after they were targeted by a raft of fake accounts.

Bogus internet pages have been set up in the names of players including Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Rio Ferdinand.

Now United have issued a statement to fans saying none of the club's stars have genuine pages on Twitter and Facebook.

United said: “The club wishes to make it clear that no Manchester United players maintain personal profiles on social networking websites.“Fans encountering any web pages purporting to be written by United players should treat them with extreme scepticism.”

City confirmed that players at Eastlands have also been advised not to set up social networking pages.

United spokesman Phil Townsend said all players would be told of the club advice. He said: “Nobody can take someone else's profile off, all we can do is advise against it.”

Townsend added: “Firstly, there are people out there who impersonate them and secondly what is said on there often gets taken out of context by the media.”

But the move has been criticised by media experts, who said the club should help players to use social networking sites to connect with fans.

Martin Bryant, UK editor of The Next Web and social media expert with Marketing Manchester, believes both clubs are missing a trick.

He said: “I suppose they are both worried about some kind of PR disaster. But Twitter especially is a reflection of who you really are.

“Perhaps if players were given some media training it could be a good thing for them.”

And Eb Adeyeri, Digital Director at Lewis PR, said: “Millions of football fans from across the globe use social media sites such as Twitter to debate, discuss, and interact with their football icons every day and a blanket ban such as this will put a brick wall between the two.

"Social media sites are not the enemy; they are a medium for clubs to better engage with their supporters, wherever they may be.

"A better policy would be to encourage to make use of sites like Twitter but draw up a series of robust usage guidelines – so, for example, players can’t talk about internal matters or team selection. This would mean footballers can continue to engage with the supporters while minimising the risk of sensitive information being leaked."

Manchester City has an official club page on Twitter and the clubs have both invested heavily in their websites to communicate with fans around the globe.

Rio Ferdinand has been one of the highest profile victims of an online imposter after a Twitter account called RedRio was set up in his name.

A gloating message appeared on the account last September when United beat City 4-3 in a match which included a defensive error by Ferdinand.

The message said: “They thought they’d bought the Premier League…then they remembered we’re here! Sorry for the mistake, it won’t happen again…enjoy the bragging rights guys!”

After the remark was reported by media around the world, Ferdinand gave an interview saying: “Whoever's doing that Twitter, shut up please. It's not me, don't believe it, don't follow that Twitter page.”

However, Ferdinand does keep a page on MySpace where he promotes his business activities and he has a Twitter account in the name of his online magazine #5.

Players with other clubs who genuinely use Twitter have also found themselves in controversy after posting information online.

Striker Darren Bent used his Twitter account to put pressure on Tottenham Hotspur to grant him a transfer to Sunderland.

And last season, United's young Italian striker Federico Macheda suddenly found himself with 20,000 new Facebook 'friends' after he burst into the limelight with a spectacular debut goal.

A Facebook picture of the 17-year-old on a night out surrounded by five attractive female fans ended up being circulated on the internet.

A spokesperson for Wigan Athletic said that the club had no policy on the sites but added: 'our profile is a lot less than United'.

And a spokesperson for Bolton Wanderers added that the Trotters also had no set social media policy.
