Not only did Netanyahu “ignore” the incitement of violence against Rabin and his supporters, he actively participated in it.He lived mainly in Qatar.
I mean, it's not as if right-wing Israelis haven't assassinated their own peacemakers.
Netanyahu, then head of the opposition, and other senior Likud members attended a right-wing political rally in Jerusalem where protesters branded Rabin a “traitor,” “murderer,” and “Nazi” for signing a peace agreement with the Palestinians earlier that year.
He also marched in a Ra’anana protest as demonstrators behind him carried a mock coffin.
Netanyahu has regularly rebuffed the allegations he ignored inflammatory rhetoric that incited Rabin’s murder.
Which is why absolutely no one that has been aware of him since before his first stint as PM is surprised by him ordering the assassination of the person in charge of peace negotiations, whilst he was a guest of the new moderate Iranian President during his inauguration ceremonies.
It was as much about undermining Iran’s new president (that campaigned on normalisation with the west) and killing the talks that could end the war as it was eliminating the head of the political arm of Hamas.
He and his now ultra-right government need Hamas and Iran as the bogeymen to continue (and escalate) the war in order to stay in power, keep Israeli citizens largely in a place of rage and fear (and justify crackdowns of internal dissent, including protests calling for his ouster), and enact the sweeping reforms necessary to ensure there is no accountability for their actions before or after the horrific 7 October attacks, which they were responsible for as much as Hamas.
