As to why they sent for the rags kit rather than wear our away, might it have been that they both wore Adidas kits and we were Umbro so for a combination of contractual and aesthetic reasons?

I think we had a kit shortage - multiple games due to FAC run and reserve fixtures. Swales’ City was careful not to have too much clobber.

I was there but always thought it was because the kit man had forgotten to pack the kit, that seemed to be the rumour on the terraces, but obviously not, cheers for clearing that one up Gary.

The best (or worst) was the Monday after we’d lost to Blackburn in the FAC qtr final… suffice to say someone was unhappy at the way fans reacted to the defeat and said we should be happy we’d got to a qtr final. Someone else then piped up that our expectations were all wrong and that maybe the club needed new fans! Myself and Steve Sayer reacted quite strongly to this and Steve talked about loyalty and needing reward. The person who piped up about needing new fans had gone shortly after Garry Cook arrived - it’s not a name anyone will know so no point guessing.

It was poisonous in the away end that day. Not helped by nearly everybody being on an all dayer!! The players looked visibly shocked by the abuse hurled their way at the final whistle
