Mike Summerbee OBE

North West news today, no mention for Buzzer, of course coverage for Wio. What is wrong with these people.
They also managed to squeeze in Milner and various Coronation St recipients. I have emailed them pointing out Buzzer's omission, I'm not holding my breath waiting for a reply....

Well done. The stupid thing is it would have made a better story putting Buzzer and Wio together. Buzzer a North West legend after his glory years with us did a great job at Burnley and Stockport. Shame on the Bullshit Broadcasting Company.

Shall la,la la Summerbee
The greatest centre forward in history
United 1 Man City 3
Georgie Best has got..

Buzzer.

Brilliant.
Stirred up some memories for me..!

I can't remember if we began singing 'Sha la Summerbee' in the promotion season of 65-66 or the first season back in Division 1 (66-67) but I remember the title-winning season of 67-68 was when we first heard the 'Who the f-ing he'll is he?' response from United fans at the Maine Road derby in September 67. It was quite funny at the time, moreso because it was clearly audible on Granada's highlights show on the Sunday, for which they apologised before the programme! (they used to film from the gantry right above the Kippax in those days)

Of course, after the return derby in March 68 when we hammered the Red Filth 3-1 on the way to the title, that's when the call-response 'Greatest centre-forward in history etc' was developed and taken up.

A year or so after, 'The Sunday Times' ran an article on the '4 Hardest Men in Football' based on a poll of current professionals. These included (justly!) Jack Charlton, Norman 'Bites Yer Legs' Hunter and Ron 'Chopper' Harris, all defenders. The only attacker in the list was also in the top 4.. step forward Michael George Summerbee!

He wasn't just a great player either on the wing or at centre-forward; he was well hard and took no nonsense from any opponent.

I remember 'Buzzer' and 'Chopper' Harris having a right ding-dong battle at Stamford Bridge around that time. After Summerbee 'left something' on Harris in one particular clash, the Chelsea player got up and dusted himself down only to feel a tap on his shoulder. He wheeled around, fists clenched, only to hear Summerbee saying 'I say Chopper.. do you know you've laddered your stocking?!'

Brilliant player, brilliant bloke , brilliant award!

Buzzer clearly hasn't taken out enough super-injunctions, cheated on an ill wife, said and claimed everything to remain in the public eye and got virtually everything wrong as a pundit.
